The Artist/Album: Daedelus, Bespoke (Ninja Tune, April 26th)
The Details: If you’ve seen any of Daedelus’ recent live sets, then you know what to expect from his new album. The latest in a decade-long line of restless releases, it’s just as likely to swipe vocal snippets from an old 78 cylinder as it is to lift dagger-like drums or lean synth lines from Alfred Darlington’s Lite-Brite controller.
And while some cuts spin dangerously out of control, there’s always something-that-shouldn’t-work-but-does lurking around the corner. Like the way a lo-fi jungle beat ricochets off the pop hooks in “One and Lonely” or how a rare reunion with Busdriver (the underground rapper did an entire record with Daedelus in 2003) reveals the guy can actually sing, not just spit rhymes that’d leave anyone without a dictionary in the dust.
