No offense against the Black Lips—they are our current cover story, after all—but Jay Reatard just stole self-titled’s blackened heart and became our favorite gutter rock artist since, well, the Black Lips. Not because the bassist in the photo above looks like a younger King Buzzo, either. To be honest, we were already halfway there after hearing his recent singles comp; Tuesday’s opening slot for Spoon simply sealed the deal. In fact, we were so into Jay-tard’s set that self-titled left early, satisfied and ready to soak up Dungen’s special acoustic performance at (Le) Poisson Rouge. More on that later. this set was unreal. Jay never stops playing and just ends a song, yells the name of the next one, says “Let’s go!” and hammers on into it. Incredible.
