TEST PRESSING: Stream Zombi’s ‘Slow Oscillations’ EP, Featuring the Winners Of Our Remix Contest With Relapse

After much deliberation, Zombi have selected the grand prize winner and runner-ups in the remix contest we held with the interstellar duo earlier this summer. Here’s the breakdown—including a surprisingly sunny synth edit from dälek—and a complete streaming version of the remix EP Relapse will be releasing for free through Amazon later this month…

CONTEST: Win Limited Vinyl and Concert Tickets From John Maus

Now that our new issue is finally out, we’d like to celebrate its release alongside John Maus’ latest LP, We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves. Maus is in town to play three shows this week, including an Other Music in-store at 8 and two stops with Puro Instinct. We’ve got a pair of tickets for his Glasslands gig later tonight. If you want them, E-mail our editor the answer to the following question: What kind of animal is staring at our writer and John near the end of his cover story? Since he’s got nothing better to do, he’ll randomly select a winner this afternoon.

For those of you who don’t live in New York, we’ve got two hand-numbered copies of Maus’ album; one will be given away via our Facebook page, and the other will be distributed through our Twitter account. Since we miss the days of sitting next to our radio, waiting to win Metallica tickets, both of those will be announced at random points over the next couple days. You’ll be given a little bit of time to answer questions there, too, so don’t panic!

In the meantime, let us know what you think of the issue and spread the word if you can!

Remix Zombi and Score a Pro Soundcloud Account, Limited Vinyl, and More

As longtime fans of Zombi—including the myriad solo tracks of synth cadet Steve Moore and drummer Anthony Paterra—we’re proud to present a remix contest tied to their new Escape Velocity record. Here’s what Moore had to say about it…

“Sometimes in the middle of the night, I think of something that’s funny, then I go get a pen and I write it down. Or if the pen’s too far away, I have to convince myself that what I thought of ain’t funny.” —Mitch Hedberg

This sums up the way I write music. I feel weird even taking credit for writing this song; it was just running through my head one night. So I don’t have any insight into what it means or anything, it’s just the product of a random firing of synapses. I got the title from an episode of Radiolab I heard on NPR about how memories are formed.

Good luck with the remix. All styles are welcome, but if you really want to get our attention, I recommend taking it in a New Jack Swing or Shep Pettibone-style ’90s house direction…

Wondering Why He’s Just Not Into You Anymore? Or Why You Haven’t Had Sex In Months? The Vaselines Want To Help!

So we had a serious why-the-hell-not epiphany when the Vaselines announced their long-awaited—as in decades—second album a couple months ago. And it goes a little something like this: wouldn’t it be apropos if we asked the pair to answer reader questions about love, sex, and why they’ll never be able to marry their hamster, cat, or horse?

After all, the new Vaselines record is called Sex With an X, and one of their most beloved indie pop jams features the following lines: “You think you’re a man/You are only a boy/You think you’re a man/You are only a toy/You think you’re a man/But you just couldn’t see/You weren’t man enough to satisfy me.”

Preach on, brothers and sisters; preach on. And while you’re busy getting ready to revisit “Monsterpussy,” “Rory Rides Me Raw” and “Molly’s Lips” on the road next month, we’ll be fielding the deepest, darkest queries of your fans.

Here’s how this is gonna work…Check out the two free cuts after the jump, let them sink in a bit, and then leave your battle of the sexes questions as a comment or—if you want to get really real—E-mail our editor. The deadline for submissions to the band’s advice column is Friday at noon EST. Oh, and the “Sex With an X” 7-inch drops on Tuesday.

WHY? BECAUSE WE LIKE YOU: Win a Pair of Limited Edition Etnies From Lullabye Arkestra

We’ve already told you why Lullabye Arkestra is “Canada’s craziest married couple,” a “lo-fi Kylesa” that actually lives up to their song titles (“We Fuck the Night,” “This Is a Storm,” etc. etc.) and leaves most of today’s post-hardcore pack in the dust. So yeah, we’re psyched to be unloading a pair of the band’s limited edition Etnies. Follow us on Twitter in the coming week for your chance to win. In the meantime, here are the band’s looming tour dates with their Vice labelmates Pierced Arrows, a couple of free MP3s from Threats/Worship, and a link to the group’s recent digital EP. It’s enough to make us dust off a copy of Skate or Die.

Win Tickets to Health’s Reznor-Free Show At the Knitting Factory!

Fresh off their string of mom-impressing shows with Nine Inch Nails, Health is headed to the Knitting Factory tomorrow for their only NYC-area appearance. Supporting the s/t-approved noiseniks are Angel Deradoorian of Dirty Projectors and the Dan Deacon-related duo Video Hippos. (Careful: Their Web site is almost as epilectic as M.I.A.’s.) Since we want you to have extra money for those $3 Pabst cans—or even a Red Stripe if you’re lucky—self-titled has a pair or two of tickets to give away. E-mail events@self-titledmag.com for a piece of that percussive, art school dropout action. First come, first served.

We’ve Got Two Pairs of Superpitcher/Michael Mayer Tickets For Tonight!

Judged solely by their stark and stirring techno sets, Michael Mayer and Superpitcher aren’t exactly the types you’d expect to form a ‘fun-loving duo.’ Yet here they are, going so far as to construct comic book sleeves and sloppily-stitched puppets (see above) for their oft-surprising Supermayer project. To say we’re psyched about the pair’s appearance at the last night of Été D’Amour’s Santos residency would be a severe understatement. After all, we’re a HUGE fan of Superpitcher alone—both his original tracks (the piano stabs, steady beat and sweeping strings of “Happiness” have yanked a couple emo-tastic tears from us before) and his rather deep DJ sets.

Anyway, we’ve managed to wrangle a couple pairs of tickets for self-titled readers who’d like to join us tonight. Find out how you can win them after the jump …

S/T-FREE: Win A Pair of Kevin Saunderson Tickets!

Techno heads, take note: Kevin Saunderson—one of the Belleville Three’s true pioneers—will be spinning records in Brooklyn this Sunday, July 13, as the “Sunday Best” weekly takes over the Yard from 3-9 p.m. Expect some Midwestern classics (Saunderson’s Inner City duo shifted more than 6 million worldwide albums over the course of two LPs and 12 Top 40 UK hits), as well as a glimpse at Saunderson’s next future-shocked direction. And who knows what that’ll be? After all, Saunderson commissioned an incredible collection of artists to remix his classic material this year, including Simian Mobile Disco, Loco Dice, John Tejada, Luciano, Jesse Rose, the Rapture, Carl Craig and Mathew Jonson. Everyone from minimal techno architects to electro-house auteurs, in other words. As for Saunderson himself, the producer/DJ is currently crafting remixes for two Next Big Things: The Presets and Hercules and Love Affair.

So yeah, we’re excited to see a Detroit techno legend (and Brooklyn native!) in the flesh. Care to join us? Then e-mail aparks@self-titledmag.com quickly, as we have a pair of tickets to give away randomly.

Oh, and to tide you over until Sunday, we have a special Resident Advisor set (with the closest tracklisting s/t could find) after the jump …
