PEEP SHOW @ SXSW: We Were Promised Jetpacks Put the Rockateer Gear Down, Pick Up an Acoustic

Yes we realize it’s almost June. That said, we uncovered yet another set of SXSW-related video clips this week—clips we’re going to share throughout the holiday weekend because self-titled doesn’t know the meaning of ‘vacation.’ First up: an interview and pair of special acoustic performances from We Were Promised Jetpacks. Aside from possessing the most brilliant band name of 2009—not including Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, of course—the quartet is our favorite Scottish band since their Fatcat labelmates, The Twilight Sad.

Find out why before their debut, These Four Walls, drops in early July…

Adidas‘ roaming South by Southwest van recently kidnapped self-titled’s managing editor, Arye Dworken, and forced him to interview as many buzz bands as possible. On camera with cliche-free questions in hand. No pressure, right?

Believe it or not, our final round of clips is running this week, beginning with an interview and pair of unplugged performances from We Have Band. Having fallen for their Le Tigre-like Kitsuné contribution last year, we’re quite psyched to finally hear their debut full-length sometime in ‘09. Here are some details about it…

Just when you thought we were done with our South by Southwest coverage, one of s/t’s favorite photographers submitted two extensive sets of shots to us. First up: his ‘man on the street’ portraits of fans at the fest. And to-be-posted soon after that: casual and live portraits of everyone from Passion Pit to Hockey.

SXSW SPOTLIGHT: Bishop Allen @ Secretly Canadian Showcase, The Mohawk, 3.19.09

GRRR...INDEED: Justin Rice of Bishop Allen

GRRR...INDEED: Justin Rice of Bishop Allen

The Artist: Brooklyn-based twee pop never sounded so fresh or unpretentious.

Their Latest Release: Grrr… (Dead Oceans, 2009)

The Set in a Few Sentences: If the only way for indie-ish bands to make a living anymore is by licensing their music to advertising campaigns, Bishop Allen should be sitting pretty in a comfortable tax bracket by the time they hang it up. Bouncyfunhappy music may be commonplace these days, but it sounds like a smile coming from these youthful, good-looking guys and gal.

And a Letter Grade: A-

SXSW SPOTLIGHT: Annuals @ Filter’s Showdown at Cedar Street, 3.19.09

"Arcade Fire, who?"

Photos/Text by Lizz Kannenberg

The Artist: Well-rounded/ambitious pop from Raleigh, NC.

Their Latest Release: Such Fun (Canvasback, 2008)

The Set in a Few Sentences: It may have been sunny and sweaty for this mid-afternoon outdoor party, but Annuals remained tightly composed to deliver a poised, sweeping set. Indie pop is seldom more powerful or well-executed, but the group seems to have lost some of its charming passion.

And a Letter Grade: B+

More melodramatic poses after the jump …

Some of the best times we’ve ever had at SXSW have been at Vice’s annual closing night party … except for when someone cracked the railing on a roof deck, ensuring that the Black Lips, Les Savy Fav and Fucked Up would not be following Against Me! this evening. That sucked. Otherwise, we always look forward to making it past the finish line with free drinks in hand at 5 a.m. Looks like you some of you guys felt the same way this year …
