Washed Out @ Santos Party House, 10.20.09
Words and Photos by Andrew Parks
The last time Washed Out was in town, he split a hype-raking headlining set into two distinct sections: a sideman-backed series of night light ballads and a cruise control attempt at channeling discos from decades past. The latter was way more effective, as it got right to the root of why Ernest Greene’s quickly become one of the hottest unsigned commodities in indie rock. And that is his ability to translate the barely legal loft party thrills of underground dance tracks for kids dig Daft Punk and their Ed Banger descendants, but don’t know the first thing about Detroit techno, IDM and countless other strains of crucial-but-not-quite-trendy electronic music. Animal Collective models the next Goatwhore cover
[Photos/Video by Andrew Parks]
To answer your first question, yes the guys in the devil’s night costumes were Animal Collective in disguise—the closest they’ll ever come to high art versions of the mimes that haunt the subway and Central Park. And Danny Perez, why, he was hiding where you’d least expect it, playing a wizard-behind-the-curtain part quite well. We found this out by chatting with Gus, one of the sound engineers brought in to help filter hundreds of raw files through 36 speakers at the Guggenheim premiere of “Transverse Temporal Gyrus.” We’ll explain why many people were bored by the patience-testing performance art piece tomorrow, but for now, all we can say is we found a new appreciation for Animal Collective’s ambition after seeing just how calculated and complex the entire thing was on paper.
Check out a video clip after the jump. And again, we’ll have a full report with lots of pro photos tomorrow… Read more

PEEP SHOW: Michel Gondry Directs New Mia Doi Todd Video, Joins Her Band For L.A. Residency

Mia Doi Todd, one of L.A.’s most sorely overlooked singer-songwriters, has tapped Michel Gondry for a new music video and…her live band.
“It’s fun,” he told Entertainment Weekly, alluding to a Spaceland residency that starts tonight. “I always wanted to be in a band again. But I don’t think the drum is really the instrument she needs, so I try to be as light as possible. Sometimes she feels I’m a little bit like an elephant. I’m going to amputate my feet and replace them with feathers, to be able to fit her music.”
One perfect pairing for Todd’s precious pop songs is the following video, which was directed by Gondry in anticipation of her ninth, as-yet-unrecorded album… Read more
PEEP SHOW: ‘Wu-Tang Is For the Children!’ and 40 Other Grammy Moments That Were Wayyy More Interesting Than Sunday Night’s Telecast

We love you, Soy Bomb. And George Burns. And Miles Davis. And Yoko Ono. And, well, everyone in the following post, which proves how random the Grammys have been for the past 52 years, from Kiss presenting an award with 2Pac to Eddie Vedder reminding us that his dad’s dead and it’s all bullshit anyway.
Also appearing at some point in the proceedings: David Bowie, Debbie Harry, Amy Winehouse, Slipknot, MC Hammer, the White Stripes, John Wayne, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, U2 acting like absolute jack asses, Rodney Dangerfield, and Queensryche. Yes, Queensryche, because nothing makes us feel like some silent lucidity action quite like a night at the Grammys.
Be sure to comment if we missed anything from five decades of ‘music’s biggest night’! Read more

Swans, live in 1986
Now that Michael Gira’s surprised miscreants like us with news of a Jarboe-less Swans reunion, we’ve been left with no choice but to play Children of God on repeat this morning. And then there are the following classic video clips, a YouTube transfer of the band’s rare concert video, A Long Slow Screw, and a short but bittersweet doc from the Czech Republic. While Gira’s much older now, and has taken to performing acoustic shows while sitting down, we can assure you that said acoustic shows have reduced us to rubble in the past few years. Which means, yes, we are beyond psyched to hear that he’s resuscitating some of the most influential noise-rock songs of all time.
As for what Jarboe thinks of all this, she posted the following vague statement on her Web site last night: Read more
PEEP SHOW: Watch New Order Play New York’s Ukrainian National Home Way Back In 1981

We had an iTunes moment this morning, one involving a timeless track suddenly appearing in shuffle mode. And what a track it was: New Order’s “Ceremony,” quite possibly one of post-punk’s finest moments, a devastating mix of hope and helplessness.
To see what we mean, check out the following YouTube clips, a six-song bootleg from a New York show that happened more than 28 years ago. To put the passage of time in perspective, self-titled’s editor was three months old when people lined up to see this gig, and the pain of Ian Curtis’ suicide was still plastered across everyone’s faces. Wait until you see their 10-minute rendition of “Temptation.” Incredible… Read more
