LISTEN: Earth’s New Album, ‘Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II’

[Pitchfork] As promised in a self-titled interview with Pelican’s Trevor de Brauw, Earth venture further into their self-made forest than ever on Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light II. No wonder why frontman Dylan Carlson was name-dropping artists like Sandy Denny and the Smoke Fairies in our year-end issue, which can be read below alongside a stream of Earth’s entire new album…

LISTEN: Busdriver, “Superhand’s Mantra” (Featuring Aesop Rock)

If you’re like us and actually have fond memories of Def Jux’s heyday, and Busdriver’s first couple LPs—including one with Daedelus—the following 7-inch-only collaboration with Aesop Rock will almost make you forget about the MC’s well-intentioned Christmas caroling with Kimya Dawson.

“Songs born out of aggression tend to usually make the final cut over here,” Busdriver writers on his Web store, which is offering an exclusive blue vinyl pressing of ‘Superhand’s Mantra.’ “This song is no exception. I asked Aesop Rock to join me in a spiraling death plunge into rap’s blackened heart and he happily agreed. This song is the aftermath of that club house agreement.

LISTEN: Korallreven’s ‘ONANDONANDON’ Mixtape

Some thoughts from Marcus Joons, via Oki-Ni:

I know, I know, I know that you should try to be in the moment, in the now, and that you should not always go for what’s around the corner or use witchcraft to see what is in the future. Anyway, this is not what’s now, this is where we will head next: into rave, into trance.

LISTEN: Porter Ricks, ‘Biokinetics’ (Type Records Reissue)

Via Type:

Techno isn’t a genre that has birthed many consistent albums, and the dub techno subgenre even less so, but one indisputable classic is Porter Ricks’ debut ‘Biokinetics’. Originally issued on the legendary Basic Channel sub-label Chain Reaction in 1996 following a trio of 12”s, ‘Biokinetics’ was the first of the label’s album releases, and still stands as its crowning achievement. The duo was made up of dark ambient pioneer Thomas Koner and sound engineer Andy Mellwig, and between them they re-framed the techno sound, imbuing the spacious ambience pioneered by label bosses Mark Ernestus and Moritz Von Oswald with a frosty, isolated experimental bent, and combining it with the sort of haunted minimalism of early Plastikman…But as with any great album, it’s hard to exactly put your finger on what makes it a classic. Simply put ‘Biokinetics’ is one of the most important records in the genre, and it’s pleasure for us to make it available to the world once more.

PIAPTK Records Presses New Ariel Pink/R. Stevie Moore Single On Mirror Shards, Psychedelic Drum Heads and Recycled Paper

Well then; good thing we checked our E-mail just now. Had we not, we may have missed out on “SteviePink Javascript,” a truly bizarre lathe-cut 7” from Ariel Pink and his old buddy R. Stevie Moore. Here’s the deal, via PIAPTK Records, which may still have a few of its 88 copies available:

An amazing 6 minute space droner collaboration from Ariel Pink & R. Stevie Moore. Only 88 copies were made, and they lathe cut onto 7” MIRRORS. Comes in silkscreened holographic drum covering, in several different colors. Almost every aspect of this record was made from recycled or upcycled materials. The mirrored acrylic was collected over several years from the by-the-pound remnant bin of a Tacoma plastic supplier. It came from the end pieces and overcut scraps of various projects and was otherwise destined for the dump. The holographic covers were hand-cut with a T-square and boxcutter (hence the jaggedness of some) from the end remnants of rolls of psychedelic drum-covering. Even the paper for the insert was picked up at a garage sale.

Have a listen to the pair’s very strange trip below, and check out other ‘unique’ vinyl releases from Casiotone For the Painfully Alone, Wooden Wand and more at PIAPTK’s online store
