A classic !!! shot, with Justin Vandervolgen on the far right
One of the reasons we weren’t all that into !!!’s recent Terminal 5 set was the obvious absence of Justin Vandervolgen. The multi-instrumentalist/producer left the band nearly two years ago and, well, we haven’t gotten over it yet. That’s because his mixing skills made sense out of the band’s controlled chaos, leading to such modern dance-rock classics as “Me and Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard” and “Pardon My Freedom.”
Now that he’s focusing on two distinct projects—TBD with Lee Douglas, and the disco edit alias Try To Find Me (check out his new mix here)—we couldn’t be happier about hosting one of Justin’s floor-filling DJ sets at the final OSCILLATIONS of 2009. Details are here. Oh, and be sure to follow our Twitter feed for chances to get in gratis.
Now here are three mixes to give you an idea of what you’re in for… Read more

The following video is a special glimpse of a self-titled staff photographer bringing the bleary-eyed beauty out in Brooklyn and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. Be sure to catch him headlining our official CMJ showcase tonight at 9, and when you’re ready for a good read, our extensive MBAR feature is here. Read more
OSCILLATIONS Returns To (Le) Poisson Rouge With a CMJ Bill That’s Been Pre-Approved By Pitchfork, The New York Times, Kanye West & More

It’s been a good nine months since we last held an OSCILLATIONS party at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Which is unfortunate considering our School of Seven Bells show was a resounding success, making us want to throw such a thing on a monthly basis.
That didn’t quite happen, but we’re over it. You see, all that time’s been spent building the best possible bill for self-titled’s first official CMJ showcase; one that’s related to TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, Kanye West and Pitchfork’s Best New Music section. (An unofficial all-nighter—much like last year’s deliciously messy Jay Reatard show—will be revealed in the coming days.) And here it is, with $10 advance tickets available now on LPR’s site…

TEST PRESSING: Cousin Cole Offers Up An Exclusive MP3 Edit of Silver Apples’ Classic “Oscillations” Single

In a total coincidence a couple days ago, Cousin Cole of Flagrant Fowl sent us an MP3 version of a Silver Apples edit from last year’s stellar Canyon Dancing EP. What’s the song, you ask? Why, it’s the one and only “Oscillations”—the more cowbell version. Since Cole and his DJ/production partner, Pocketknife, are spinning our OSCILLATIONS party tomorrow night at Studio B, we thought this exclusive digital rip would be a theme song of sorts.
Enjoy after the jump, along with a special video and some other Flagrant Fowl-related mixes featuring No Age, Tanlines, Theo Parrish, Tinariwen, School of Seven Bells, Animal Collective and countless other seemingly unmixable artists… Read more
TEST PRESSING: Flagrant Fowl Unleash Mix For OSCILLATIONS Show, Featuring Exclusive Edits and Classic Cuts From Suicide, Arthur Russell, and More

"No, you the man!"—Pocketknife, on left, with Cousin Cole
With self-titled’s latest OSCILLATIONS party just a week away, we roped in one of the night’s resident DJs—Skooby Laposky, a.k.a Pocketknife of Flagrant Fowl infamy—for a special mix that offers insights into the influences of his label and hotly-tipped edits/productions with Cousin Cole. (See also: Michna’s rad-as-hell Seeing Colors mix.)
While we definitely dug hearing such s/t favorites as Arthur Russell, Telepathe and Suicide, the real treat here is a number of exclusives, including Flagrant Fowl’s first artist signings and edits of This Heat, Will Oldham and Mi Ami that’ll likely end up on the sequels to Tambourine Dream and Canyon Dancing. Oh, yeah—Skooby also shared such priceless lines as “You can play this jam at a pagan homecoming dance or maybe even a wizard’s retirement party” in his track-by-track commentary. Like what you hear? Be sure to arrive at Studio B between 8 and 9 for Flagrant Fowl’s opening set and 2-for-1 drinks. (They’ll also be spinning in between each band and at the end of the night. Read more
OSCILLATIONS: While New York Is Away, S/T Comes Out to Play With The Glimmers, Liv Spencer, Cubic Zirconia and More

Who needs Jane’s Addiction and [insert buzz band name here] when you’ve got Belgium’s the Glimmers for an intimate show at Brooklyn’s revamped Studio B? With one-third of self-titled in Austin Twittering about Metallica’s performance at Stubbs, the rest of us got dance-floor silly. Benjamin Roeder and James F!@#$%^ Friedman opened up the evening. Cubic Zirconia, performing live, told everyone to “Fuck Work.” Liv Spencer dropped some treasure-trove house gems. And the Glimmers took the stage around 2, helping us all stop caring about missing the GZA’s WTF performance with the Black Lips in Texas. Check out photos and video after the jump.

Still not sure if you’re gonna make it to OSCILLATIONS at Studio B tonight? We’ve got a couple reasons for you to vote YES to a night on the town—or the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn—with self-titled, beginning with two Beats in Space mixes from the Glimmers. David ‘Benoelie’ Fouquaert was also nice enough to share the stories behind some of their selections and a handful of popular edits/remixes for the Chemical Brothers, Roxy Music and Freddie … Fucking … Mercury.
