As you may have noticed in the flyer to your right, we’re hosting a free holiday party tomorrow night to celebrate the release of our year-end issue. All you have to do is RSVP to events@grandlifenyc.com and show up at Tribeca Grand around 11, when Veronica Vasicka of Minimal Wave records sets things off with some choice rarities from her extensive vinyl collection. Xeno & Oaklander will follow that up with a live set around 12:30, and Gavin Russom (The Crystal Ark, Black Meteoric Star, LCD Soundsystem) and Ilirjana Alushaj (Typical Girls, Apache Beat) will close the night with some more s/t-approved dancefloor favorites. Oh, and if you’re worried about getting sauced in such classy environs, drink specials include $5 beers and $8 Stoli cocktails.

So with all of that in mind, we’d like to revisit three exclusive Needle Exchange mixes, a handful of MP3s and some year-end content from Russom and Vasicka after the jump. See you tomorrow!

One of the reasons we weren’t all that into !!!’s recent Terminal 5 set was the obvious absence of Justin Vandervolgen. The multi-instrumentalist/producer left the band nearly two years ago and, well, we haven’t gotten over it yet. That’s because his mixing skills made sense out of the band’s controlled chaos, leading to such modern dance-rock classics as “Me and Giuliani Down By the Schoolyard” and “Pardon My Freedom.”

Now that he’s focusing on two distinct projects—TBD with Lee Douglas, and the disco edit alias Try To Find Me (check out his new mix here)—we couldn’t be happier about hosting one of Justin’s floor-filling DJ sets at the final OSCILLATIONS of 2009. Details are here.
It’s been a good nine months since we last held an OSCILLATIONS party at (Le) Poisson Rouge. Which is unfortunate considering our School of Seven Bells show was a resounding success, making us want to throw such a thing on a monthly basis.

That didn’t quite happen, but we’re over it. You see, all that time’s been spent building the best possible bill for self-titled’s first official CMJ showcase; one that’s related to TV on the Radio, Grizzly Bear, Kanye West and Pitchfork’s Best New Music section. (An unofficial all-nighter—much like last year’s deliciously messy Jay Reatard show—will be revealed in the coming days.) And here it is, with $10 advance tickets available now on LPR’s site…

The Artist: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson

His Latest Release: Summer of Fear (Saddle Creek)

What’s Been Said: “As dramatic and erratic as Robinson is, his songs never flirt with histrionics, nor do they hide his shameless, troubling relationships with sex and drugs and alcohol. His album is a mess of riffs and poetry you can get drunk on, in the bar or your bedroom.” — FADER

“The gripping, gorgeous Summer of Fear trades fractured gray folk for multihued and ambitiously arranged Americana. To hear the swooping strings on ‘Summer of Fear pt. 1′ or the stately horns parading across the 11-minute ‘Losing 4 Winners’ is to witness catharsis crafted with both passion and smarts.” — SPIN

“Much like Conor Oberst, Robinson may be surrounded by friends and their democratic noises, but his burdens are all his own. The bands and artists already mentioned help provide some of Robinson’s sonic signposts as well. The art-soul bleat of TVOTR is there, though MBAR steers more towards Dylan/Band loose-ended ramble than Bowie-styled museum pieces, putting him more in line with Oberst, Phosphorescent, and even the Arcade Fire.” — Pitchfork

The Artist: Cymbals Eat Guitars

Their Latest Release: Why There Are Mountains (Sister’s Den)

What’s Been Said: “Plenty of bands want to take you higher and even more are looking to get you down, but it’s increasingly rare to find a record that sounds good with a AAA guidebook and a few hours to get to god knows where, as long as it’s somewhere else…here, the journey is the end not the means; fortunately, that gives Why There Are Mountains astounding replay value.” — Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“The sources for [frontman Joseph D'Agostino's] inspiration can be obvious—Pavement, Built to Spill, Dinosaur Jr.—but so are his ambition and passion…Seeing the band live drove home the full effect of guileless catharsis: Mr. D’Agostino wears himself out for you. (Like a clutch hitter between swings, he ritually composed himself after every song, wiping down his guitar neck, adjusting his capo, taking a deep breath.)” — The New York Times

“The launching point of ‘Wind Phoenix’ sounds like a moment that ad execs would kill to have in a commercial. Sure it takes a bit of a Malkmus noodling turn after that, but the initial explosion is pure joy.” — You Ain’t No Picasso

The Artist: Holly Miranda

Her Latest Release: Sleep On Fire EP (self-released; debut LP due out through XL in early 2010)

What’s Been Said: “Whether she’s performing a cappella or surrounded by a full, warm fuzz of music—as on her Dave Sitek–produced forthcoming debut—Miranda is a rare talent. And no, we’re not the first to hear it—she’s already been hyped by Kanye (always Kanye!), The New York Times and Vanity Fair.” — Time Out NY

“While Miranda has experienced success with her other band, Brooklyn outfit the Jealous Girlfriends, this harnesses a different energy. You can hear the influence of New Order as much as you can TV On the Radio, Patti Smith, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs…consider this fair warning: she’s the real deal.” — Vanity Fair

“There’s a comforting directness to [the small Brooklyn club, Zebulon]: the better the audience reception, the quieter the room gets. But sometimes the room isn’t enough, as was clear on Thursday night, when Holly Miranda’s half-hour set seemed to swallow the place whole.” — The New York Times

“A friend of the Tripwire sent us the new Holly Miranda record a couple weeks ago and we’ve been obsessed with the song ‘Slow Burn Treason’ ever since. Despite the fact she just finished the recording and has yet to announce any release plans (we were told by her management it is coming out ‘later this year’), we’re going to go on the record saying this is the best record David Sitek has produced since Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes.” — Tripwire

The Artist: Delorean

Their Most Recent Release: Ayrton Senna EP (Fool House)

What’s Been Said: “If The Horrors think they’ve got the drop on the reinvention thing, they might want to have a chat with these lads. From the Basque region of Spain, they started out as emo rockers before morphing into euphoric trance-pop meerkats. Snapped up by hypercool French bloggers Fluo Kids for their Fool House label. This highlight from their Ayrton Senna EP is like mainlining glitter.” — NME (see also: this profile)

“They can be as airy and suave as Air France or Phoenix, but their unremitting beats are also plenty huge enough to convert fans of Cut Copy or MGMT…On the Ayrton Senna EP, the group’s burgeoning dance-pop savvy comes into bloom with three unstoppable summer bangers.” — Pitchfork (Best New Music)

“Aryton Senna is broad, dumb fun, but it’s also immaculate and deeply considered. In short, Aryton Senna is delightful. And that’s not a statement I often make without qualification or exception.” — Cokemachineglow

With self-titled’s latest OSCILLATIONS party just a week away, we roped in one of the night’s resident DJs—Skooby Laposky, a.k.a Pocketknife of Flagrant Fowl infamy—for a special mix that offers insights into the influences of his label and hotly-tipped edits/productions with Cousin Cole. (See also: Michna’s rad-as-hell Seeing Colors mix.)

While we definitely dug hearing such s/t favorites as Arthur Russell, Telepathe and Suicide, the real treat here is a number of exclusives, including Flagrant Fowl’s first artist signings and edits of This Heat, Will Oldham and Mi Ami that’ll likely end up on the sequels to Tambourine Dream and Canyon Dancing. Oh, yeah—Skooby also shared such priceless lines as “You can play this jam at a pagan homecoming dance or maybe even a wizard’s retirement party” in his track-by-track commentary. Like what you hear? Be sure to arrive at Studio B between 8 and 9 for Flagrant Fowl’s opening set and 2-for-1 drinks. (They’ll also be spinning in between each band and at the end of the night.

And Skooby’s thoughts on every selection…

Bot’ Ox, “Tragedy Symphony”
The production from this dynamic duo (Cosmo Vitelli and Julien Biffraz) is topnotch. I love the long siren synth-n-blips intro that builds up into some serious slo-mo heat. I guess being Parisian helps when you’re singing lyrics like this—I would just sound like a contrived dirtbag, but these dudes nail it perfectly. Mais oui!

Suicide, “Ghost Rider (Pocketknife’s Torn Bowery Blazer Remix)”
This remix is from the second EP (2007’s Tougher Than Featherz) that Cole and I put out a few years back. I love how direct Suicide was. I remember Alan Vega saying in an interview that he and Martin Rev were just making blues when someone told him they were “avant-garde.” We actually found some deadstock of this EP in the Flagrant archives so the usual spots are carrying this again for those who missed it the first time around.

Telepathe, “Sinister Militia (TMJ!!! Mix)”
I gotta rep for Brooklyn a bit. It seems like dudeskis are always the ones that get to bang on shit and make “smart art” music, but these girls are flipping that. The band is coming from a lot of musical angles and that combo is making some nice pop shapes.

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice, “I Am the One and He Is the Caretaker of My Heart (Pocketknife Remix)”
This remix will be out on the Canyon Dancing 2: Plateau Party EP. I love me some weird beard tunes and I take great delight in reworking songs like this one. You can play this jam at a pagan homecoming dance or maybe even a wizard’s retirement party.

Bostro Pesopeo, “Falls (Hercules & Love Affair Remix)”
I love a good remix that involves two artists/groups that I dig. It’s like killing two birds with one stone since I get to blab about one artist reworking the other in the same sentence. Cole turned me onto Bostro’s tunes and it was cool to see H&LA remixing one of his tracks with some old school acid lines and house drums.

Youth, “Dark Moons”
Youth is a dude out of Brisbane, Australia, that’s been making some down under disco tracks with great production ability. Cole got in touch with him after hearing some of his remixes and he sent along some originals that we’re going to release later this year.

RCMP, “Ibiza PA (Cousin Cole Remix)”
Cousin hooked up this remix for RCMP who are a new italo disco duo (comprised of DJ Apt One of the Philadelphyinz and Relative Q outta Pittsburgh). Their EP is coming out on Flamin’ Hotz Records in the next month or so. Be sure to check out the mustachioed tunes!

Arthur Russell, “Treehouse (Lil Tony Rework)”
This is one of three recent “interpretations” of classic Arthur tracks that just came out on the Electric Minds label. I was going to put one of the others on the mix, but Cole had me listen to this one again and I understood why he liked Lil Tony’s the most. It’s minimal, but it’s got a driving emotional quality to it.

Kanye West, “Love Lockdown (Cousin Cole Remix)”
Kanye surprised everyone last year with 808s! He continues to be an interesting pop figure and I do check his blog on the regular (at least the Internet is infinite enough to keep up with his ego!). It was great that ‘Ye made the stems accessible for fiddling around with; Cole did a great job flipping the entire feeling of the song into a disco burner. This remix is out on our current EP.

Lykke Li, “Breaking It Up (Pocketknife’s Loosefoot Remix)”
This remix is on the flipside of our latest EP. It was commissioned by Lykke Li’s label, but they didn’t want to release it, so we went the white label route. I’m glad to see it getting some shine in other people’s playlists. I think this is one of my favourite remixes that I’ve worked on. The children’s choir makes it almost impossible not to sing along with.

Neil Young “My My Hey Hey (Cousin Cole’s Into the Blue Remix)”
A Tambourine Dream highlight for me! Our honorary third Flagrant member, C-Bassix, played some thick upright bass on this track (and my Lykke Li remix as well). I recently was chatting with Pilooski and he said that this version “sends him up to the clouds.” Nice one, Cole!

Will Oldham, “The Same Love That Makes Me Laugh (Cousin Cole Remix) Demo”
A new remix from CC that will be on Tambourine Dream 2. Cole and I are both fans of Will Oldham and his various guises. He may make a double appearance on TD2 since I’ve got a Bonnie Prince Billy remix that’s almost done.

Mock & Toof, “Brown Bred”
The Death From Abroad family is solid. Mock & Toof are making some great records and I particularly like the light acid lines, swoosh synths, and live drums in this track. I’m definitely going to be following these Londoners’ releases.

Mi Ami, “Version (Pocketknife Edit)”
Another Canyon Dancing 2 alert! When I first heard Mi Ami, it was another one of their songs and I immediately checked out their catalogue to see if there was potential for a rework. The combination of instruments in the band is pretty straightforward (drums, bass, guitar), but these dudes make some great things happen.

Black Cock, “Get Ready (Three Card Monte’s Slight Refondle)”
A classic Black Cock edit that was given a slight reworking by one of our new artists. This edit has got a dark hypnotic quality to it and was a great track to segue from the new school dub freakout of Mi Ami back into disco territory. There’s a reason why the BC edits are so famous—they’re good!

Real Ones, “Outlaw (Prins Thomas Desert Discomiks)”
I don’t know much about this band except that they’re Norwegian, but it doesn’t really matter because Prins Thomas’ “miks” is a dark burner. He pares down most of the elements from the original and rides the kick/snare combo with a dark synth line to great effect.

In Flagranti, “Scala Disco”
This edit has got to be one of my new favourites to play out. I like to call these kind of jams “stompers” since they’ve got blues guitars, slinky bass and a steady drum stomp. You can’t go wrong with Bohannon as your source material!

Three Card Monte, “Molotov”
Another stomper! TCM contacted us awhile back to check out his edits and we were feeling his work, so we’re gonna put out an EP of his material. The Flagrant Fowl family grows!

This Heat, “Sleep (Pocketknife’s Out Cold Remix) Demo”
Another track that will most likely be on Canyon Dancing 2. I gave this seminal band a little extra bump for the club and it’s a good weirdo art rock lullaby to end the night with.

Bis, “Shack Up” (from DJ-Kicks, 2005)
We first heard this version somewhere in London in a DJ set by one of our favorite DJ’s: Glasgow’s finest, Optimo. We used to play A Certain Ratio’s version about 20 years ago. It was a huge club hit in our city—well, in our DJ sets anyway—and as soon as we heard this version we knew we had our opener for the DJ-Kicks mix we were working on at that time for !K7 Records.

Primal Scream, “Loaded” (from Eskimo Volume V, 2007)
A beautiful track by one of our favorite bands. That album [Screamadelica], where “Loaded” is taken from, is so groundbreaking, so full of amazing songs, with Andrew Weatherall behind the knobs and Dr. Alex Patterson doing dubs on the twelve-inches … One of the finest crossover moments in music history between rock and electronic music. We loved it back then, and still love it today.

Disko Drunkards, “Physical” (from The Glimmers Present Disko Drunkards, 2009)
This album is a project with live musicians. “Physical” is a cover version of one of Olivia Newton John’s biggest hits from the early ’80s. We made this version more than 2 years ago, for a Swedish clothing brand. They asked us to make a cover version. At that time we were in the middle of the recording sessions of this Disko Drunkards project, and we recorded this cover version in one day. It has a very different feel than the original. Only the song is the same, the music is something completely different. Very lo-fi.

Freddie Mercury, “Love Kills” (from Fabric Live 31, 2006)
Queen … you either love them or you hate them. We think they made some amazing songs, and Freddie Mercury was one of the greatest performers of all time. His solo efforts were a bit, well, whatever, but this one is a collaboration between him and Giorgio Moroder. An interesting combination, and they both had huge mustaches! It’s not such a great song, but it was an amazing one to re-edit. We cut out all the drama and bad ’song’ structures, created an endless groove thanks to Giorgio’s music, and we added some dubbed out snippets of Freddie’s voice on top of that.

Roxy Music, “Same Old Scene” (also from Fabric Live 31)
We were asked by Brian Ferry’s son to do a remix for one of Roxy Music’s songs, and this for a Roxy Music remix project. We could choose whatever song we liked. I personally think this is one of our best remixes, as we made an extended version—very old school style—of one of their best songs. The production of the original is very 80’s and we used a lot of the original recordings. Really an amazing experience, to hear these recordings by a legendary band in your own studio, all the instruments, the background vocals, Bryan’s voice …

Download audio file (02%20The%20Salmon%20Dance%20(Heavily%20Smoked%20By%20Gilmmers%20Remix%20(Edit).mp3)

The Chemical Brothers, “The Salmon Dance (Heavily Smoked by the Glimmers)”
Being asked by one of the biggest dance acts around, to produce a remix for them, that was an honor. But what’s the use of making a dance remix for such an amazing dance act who has all the tools to make incredible dance music? So we decided to create something different, and came up with a Tone Loc kinda vibe—very early ’90s hip hop, with a drummer and a bass player. Fat Lip’s voice worked really well in that style. When the mix was delivered they told us it was their favorite remix of that track!
