Public Information has revealed the details behind Interpretations on F.C. Judd, a sequel of sorts to last year’s Electronics Without Tears compilation. Here’s how the rising experimental/electronic label describes it, along with a twilight zone track from Chris Carter…
Ever hear a record that reminds you of another artist, only different on enough levels to keep things from sounding truly derivative? Here’s one…
Death Grips have emerged from hiding once again with a stuttering, slightly demonic remix of Prodigy’s breakthrough single “Firestarter.” Available for download below alongside the ‘big beat’ original, it’s unclear whether it was rejected from last year’s Fat of the Land reissue or simply cut on the side to reflect the duo’s own rabble-rousing, safety-pinned persona…
At the risk of taking Friday morning down a mildly depressing path, here is the latest queasy, feedback-engulfed journal entry (lead vocal line: “can you believe I used to be a dreamer?”) from Carmen Villain, captured in a clip that features a lot of despondent-looking folks who clearly wish they were young again…
If there was ever any doubt as to how serious Solar Bears are about the importance of songwriting as opposed to the simple act of beat-making, consider this: they last told us about their second LP a year ago. Now set to drop next week through Planet Mu, Supermigration is exactly what they promised us back then—a deep listen that’s “darker and more psychedelic” than their self-titled debut. Or as producer/multi-instrumentalist John Kowalski says at the tail end of the following exclusive, “bleak equals beautiful”…
Avey Tare has recruited former members of Dirty Projectors (Angel Deradoorian) and Ponytail (Jeremy Hyman) for a new “cannibalistic” band called Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks. The name isn’t a surprise considering Tare’s last solo LP (2010′s Down There) was partially inspired by a Tobe Hooper film about a murderous hotel manager who feeds his tenants to a crocodile. As the singer/multi-instrumentalist said in an lengthy self-titled interview, “movies like that are more about the atmosphere they create than anything else…It’s a piece of art. If I could put it on my wall, I would. But I’m not really into the gore aspect of it. I prefer movies that are more like ghost stories, or beat-up horror films—the kind you collect on VHS tapes.”
While it’s unclear whether the trio is planning on releasing a new record, they’ll be playing a handful of shows in June, including stops in Brooklyn and the UK. Check out the dates and details below, along with one of Tare’s Down There videos…
So we hear that Brooklyn suddenly has one of New York’s best sound systems at that new spot Output. And as such, we couldn’t think of a better introduction to the borough’s very own Cielo than a “too future” set from DJ Shadow. To win a pair of VIP tickets to tomorrow’s show, read the interview below and keep your eyes locked on our Twitter page. We’ll be asking a question related to the story sometime today and passing on the passes to the first person with the right answer.
Good luck!
As if he’s not already busy enough with ongoing work alongside Om, Grails and Lilacs & Champagne—a Madlib-indebted duo who’ll drop their own new disc in a couple weeks—Emil Amos also has a revealing archival release on the way through Important Records on April 23rd. Entitled My Only Warm Coals, it’s a bonus track-packed exploration of Amos’ early four-track days as Holy Sons.
And since the producer/multi-instrumentalist/singer doesn’t like taking the easy route with anything, he offered us quite an exclusive this week: the premiere of his VHS-splicing “Aged Wine” video alongside a personal essay about the impetus of the project way back in the early ’90s…
Sub Pop has unveiled the initial lineup of its free Silver Jubilee concert. Check out the official announcement—which is much more entertaining than the ‘festival trailers’ that have infiltrated YouTube recently—down below…
