As we all know by now, new releases hit record-store shelves and digital-download services each Tuesday. That’s why self-titled presents the following every week: a new release you’d be stupid not to own (Buy It), one worth checking out if you’re the curious type (Burn It) and something you might have heard about but probably should avoid (Skip It). Simple, ain’t it?

1MM: Barack Rock Benefit, F/ Franz Ferdinand, Les Savy Fav & Fiery Furnaces @ Music Hall of Williamsburg, 10.7.08

    Photos/Text by Andrew Parks

As you might imagine by its tagline—”Music, Comedy, Action!”, featuring “6 Bands and 6 Comedians … Hyping the Hope”—Tuesday’s Barack Rock benefit was a mixed bag of stray surprises and endless set changes. The main problem was organization. Rather than take advantage of the comedians who were billed in between bands, the night’s promoters kept letting chunks of dead air settle in, leaving people with “come on already!” faces throughout the “Stage for Change” show. While we understand a group’s need for a soundcheck—especially Franz Ferdinand, since they haven’t played the U.S. or a venue this small in forever—everyone was playing four or five songs a piece, making the segues longer than the sets themselves.

Minor complaints aside, it was encouraging to see Hopeful people move between the concert itself and the “Obama Room” downstairs, balancing the need to see Guster (woah with the college rock flashback, guys!) and an unplugged-but-fierce Les Savy Fav with the debate itself, which was shown on one large screen and a handful of spotty, dorm room-sized TVs.

About Les Savy Fav by the way—it’s unfortunate that they were given a time slot right in the middle of the candidates’ sparring session. Unlike most of the other bands on the bill, they treated the show as an opportunity to do something different—something short but sweet, if you will—a series of singalong covers (Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land,” the Zombies’ “This Will Be Our Year,” David Bowies’ “Heroes”), complete with 40 lyric sheets passed out to fans and printed out by frontman Tim Harrington. We’ll reserve our judgement on Franz Ferdinand’s semi-triumphant return (the crowd simply wasn’t into last night’s performance despite the group’s convincing efforts) to this evening’s “secret set” at the same venue. Expect photos, a review and a set list from that later on. Photos for now …

GRIZZLY MAN: Daniel Rossen Finally Unveils Department of Eagles’ Live Show

    By Andrew Parks

While we’ve already thrown our support behind Department of Eagles‘ long-awaited second album (In Ear Park, out today through 4AD), self-titled was happy to see the band’s core duo—Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear and longtime friend/collaborator Fred Nicolaus—in fine living, breathing form last night. That wouldn’t be an accomplishment in the case of most 7-year-old acts, except, well …

I WAS THERE: Glasvegas @ Mercury Lounge, 10.4.08

    By Arye Dworken

If NME‘s current cover is to be believed—and hey, when isn’t it?—Glasvegas are “Britain’s best-loved band,” Scottish saviors of rock ‘n’ roll that crashed the UK charts at No. 2 with their self-titled debut. (Nipping right at the heels of Metallica’s Death Magnetic, mind you.) This time the hyperbole comes with Alan McGee’s blessing, too. According to his Guardian column, the Creation Records founder considers Glasvegas “the sound of young Scotland … I first spotted Glasvegas in 2006, playing third on the bill at the King’s Tut Wah Wah à la Oasis. They immediately caught my attention. They were rockabilly neds playing a frenetic homage to Elvis, art punk and noise. I got their MySpace that evening and loved it. In fact I hadn’t loved anything that much since the Jesus and Mary Chain demo tape in the ’80s.”

SCREAMING AT A (GALLERY) WALL: Finally, An Answer to the Abomination That Was Steven Blush’s ‘American Hardcore’

When Nathan Nedorostek left us for ‘someone else’ earlier this year, we had no idea he meant a photo-heavy book on the history of hardcore music. Due out at the end of the month via MTV Press, Radio Silence makes us wish it was 1997 again—the year of Snapcase‘s Progression Through Unlearning (sorry, but self-titled‘s roots extend to Buffalo, the land of the Goo Goo Dolls, Ani DiFranco and not much else) and that time a militant, buffoonish Earth Crisis fan clocked us in the face for wearing a leather jacket.

You had to be there. And if you weren’t, the following Radio Silence release parties are a good place to start (click the flyers to RSVP). We’ll also be running B-roll photos from the book in the third issue of self-titled

YouTube Bans Flying Lotus Video … The One We Happen To Have Right Here

Judging by the stoned genius portrayal of Flying Lotus in a recent XLR8R cover story (think Madlib with a better sense of quality control), we’re not sure if it’s surprising or expected that he just released a low-rent porno video for the rather excellent “Parisian Goldfish” single. After all, Kevin Smith and various members of the Judd Apatow crew are about to release Zack and Miri Make a Porno, putting a Revenge of the Nerds spin on Playboy humor.

Anyway, the following clip isn’t just ‘NSFW’; it’s, well, you’ll see …

    PEEP SHOW: Radiohead, “Reckoner”

    RADIOHEAD @ All Points West

MySpace Music premiered Radiohead‘s latest video today, an animated “Reckoner” clip that was one of four finalists in a contest hosted by aniBoom. Clement Picon of France won $10,000 to turn his one-minute edit into a full-length cartoon production, as promised by a promotion that drew 1,000 entries from more than 150 cities, 40 countries and all five continents. (Antarctica doesn’t count.)

“The aniBoom video competition, totally blown me away it has,” Thom Yorke said in a statement. “We are proud that In Rainbows songs were the source of inspiration for so many amazing creations.”

Three additional winners will have their works shown in the coming weeks. You can take a look at what beat them right now though …

    1MM: Pissed Jeans @ Market Hotel, 9.28.08

Pissed Jeans never cease to amaze us. Not the act of soiling one’s self like that guy on Mad Men this week; we’re talking about the only Philly band that truly reflects that city’s layer cake of grime and pure filth. To hear what we mean, cop the following MP3s and follow the “read more” road to more shots of Matt Korvette twisting and shouting like a slightly bloated cobra snake.

BOXED IN: The Best Songs on the Jesus and Mary Chain’s Rarities/B-sides Set

    By Aaron Richter

This past weekend, we locked ourselves in the self-titled office and plowed through the new Jesus and Mary Chain b-sides/rarities box set, The Power of Negative Thinking. With the help of green tea, some tasty hummus and several delicious Bounty chocolate/coconut bars, we made it through all 81 songs—nearly four hours of music—to bring you the collection’s 10 best tracks, listed in order of awesomeness.
