You may remember XXXchange from his stellar DJ set at OSCILLATIONS last year or his remix/production work for the Kills, Spank Rock, Panda Bear, Thom Yorke and, well, the list goes on. He’s a busy guy. And you can now add Win Win to that resume. A trio rounded out by longtime friends Chris Devlin (of Devlin and Darko) and A/V artist Ghostdad, Win Win dropped their self-titled debut through Vice Records this week. Here’s what Aleister X had to share about the following video, the first single from his Andrew W.K.-produced EP, The Git (out October 12 on Steev Mike Records).

Sadie said there was a new all-night ice cream parlor with a pull-up, and they had this Black Death Licorice Crystal Chunk flavour. That was all I needed to hear. We had a laff and a joke, fired up The Coop, and set out in search of that flavour. It was lefts, it was rights. Highways, and hairpins. The bloody Coops’ got a mind of it’s own and needless to say we got sidetracked. The GPS went tits-up left us in the fritz again. Seems like every time I try to do something fun, even something small like going for ice cream, I get caught up in some bloody tangent and things get all derailed, innit? That’s exactly how it went down, so let’s keep our stories straight.

As bat shit insane as most Fucked Up shows are, last night’s Brooklyn Masonic Temple gig was special on several levels. For one thing, The Chemistry of Common Life was vetted and validated from intro to out, proving that its progressive approach to hardcore is just as vicious and vital as the out-of-print 7-inches tucked away under your bed. That includes such ambient interludes as “Golden Seal” and “Looking For God,” bittersweet pills that provided much-needed breathers in between such blunt trauma tracks as “Magic Word” and the album’s towering title track.

So thank you, Fucked Up, for reminding us of why we attended nothing but hardcore shows in our teens. But more importantly, thanks for showing us there’s ways to grow old with this genre, ways to stay forever young and restless without looking or sounding like a complete cliché. (Hell, even Titus Andronicus frontman Patrick Stickles got caught up in the action, crowd-riding his way to the front several times, as seen in the above shots.)

While he’s “worshiped in France,” Gonzales—a.k.a. the former “President of the Berlin Underground”—is a pianist/producer/prankster MC who’s best known for his work with other artists.

“Ever hear of Feist?” Gonzales asked a packed Joe’s Pub crowd on Friday night. “I made her.”

He’s kidding, of course. Well, kinda. It only takes a little bit of research to realize Gonzales’ position alongside Mocky as the unsung heroes of a Canadian clique that includes Peaches, Feist and their close British friend Jamie Lidell.

That might change when Gonzales releases his next record in the spring, a Boys Noize-produced affair that’s bound to test the musical baggage of both artists. We’ll reveal exclusive details about that disc later this week, as we run separate interviews with both artists.
