LISTEN: Zola Jesus, “Avalanche (Slow)”

Zola Jesus

Nika Roza Danilova has shared the opening track from her upcoming studio album of symphonic Zola Jesus arrangements, Versions. First performed with a string quartet and JG Thirwell at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, “Avalanche (Slow)” is the polar opposite of Danilova’s past LPs—restrained, delicate and free of noise effects or fractured electronics, pushing her songwriting into promising new corners rather than simply retreading the old records with fluttering melodies and orchestral flourishes.

Versions is about the bone of the music,” the film columnist said in a press release, “taking approximations from past records and turning them inside out. With all framework exposed, the songs are given a new medium in which to evolve and bloom into their own tiny worlds.”

Check it out below and look out for the rest of the record through Sacred Bones on August 20th…
