LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Herbert, ‘Around the House’

The Artist/Album: Herbert, Around the House (Phonography, 1998)

Our Review: The first Matthew Herbert album to feature the producer’s wife, singer Dani Siciliano, also happens to be one of his best. Like nearly every other Herbert LP, Around the House was written with a stringent sample bank in mind–loops that were literally lifted from his humble abode, although you’d be hard-pressed to ID any of it. Siciliano’s vapor trail vocals stand out instead, weaving in and out of a living room listen that’s both highly experimental and wholly accessible. House music made using one’s actual house? We’ll take it.
