I worked on this behemoth off and on for the past several years. It’s probably the most deranged, dense, and detailed mix I’ve put together since 2002’s Peel Blue Equinox. There are some mixes I take as seriously as I would my albums, and this is one of them.
There are a couple themes running concurrently throughout, the predominant one being an increasing loss of sanity, as evident not only in the overall chaos, but in the plundered selection of media clips as well, grabbing from In The Mouth Of Madness, Death Becomes Her, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and everything in between. I’ve found myself under a great deal of stress these past couple years, and I’m generally very anxiety-ridden; it can be crippling at times. I think the sample choices are very reflective of that, whether it was intentional or not.
Secondly, there’s an underlying theme I had fun incorporating: the potential death (and deadliness) of the internet. To quote Kris Kristofferson from the 1999 film Netforce, “I thought the internet was our future… that it would bring us closer to each other, in a way never before thought possible. But I was wrong. All it did was create endless opportunities for perversion, corruption, greed, lust, and all of the rest of the seven deadly sins.”
Additionally, there are plenty of clear nods to my spirit animal and hometown hero, the late, great Hunter Thompson, whose voice (and daily regimen) periodically graces this mix. You could say the whole thing is very “Gonzo-esque” in nature.
I hope listeners can find some enjoyment on this roller coaster, amidst all the manic twists and turns. Hat’s off to those who make it to the finish line.
