While Kiki Hitomi got our sign of approval a while ago, the King Midas Sound vocalist just earned a couple extra points by posting a killer cover of the Crystal Waters classic “Gypsy Woman.” Not just any old rendition, either; we’re talking about freshly filtered vocals set atop the steady pulse of Ricardo Villalobos’ “Lugom-ix” single. Grab it below, alongside the DUMMY mix it’s taken from…
Words and Mix by Michael Palmer of We Were Promised Jetpacks
Hiya! I’m Mike from We Were Promised Jetpacks. Here’s a wee DJ set. The songs are essentially just songs that I like and I think go well together. I’m really not tooooo fussed about doing a DJ set where I play some songs for people. My record collection isn’t that interesting and it’s quite hard trying to judge a room and work out what people want to hear. I’m also not really too interested in having a common theme with songs, or a link in any way (“all of these songs were recorded on a Thursday!”). But I do like trying to make a whole bunch of different records by a whole bunch of different people sound like one piece of music that exists on its own. That IS fun!
I realize now that I’m relying pretty heavily on the Scottish band Errors. But fuck it. They’re great. Also, I hope they don’t hate me for putting acapellas on top of their incredible instrumental music. I won’t be telling them, so if they find out I’m blaming you…

So the first day of this year’s Pitchfork Festival was a relatively sedate one, punctuated by such attention-seizing moments as the wall of noise/heavy bass lines that bookended James Blake‘s precious but prickly version of “The Wilhelm Scream”; the sloshed college rock of Guided By Voices; an absurdly tight Battles set that made us finally believe in their Tyondai-free lineup; and some new Animal Collective song that ended in Panda Bear clobbering his kit like an angry Muppet.
More to come as the weekend goes on. For now, some photos…
Considering how vague the clip in our previous post is (maybe it’s for oOoOO‘s album instead?), we thought we’d share some tracks that are definitely from the hard drive of Balam Acab; namely some choice remixes and unreleased material from his Etherea alias…
Panda Bear recently stopped by NPR‘s studios to share some tracks from his upcoming Tomboy LP (available April 12th through Paw Tracks), as well as some of his favorite records from over the years.
As it turns out, we expanded upon the latter in our current issue, asking the Animal Collective alum to fill in the blanks for one of our “Soundtrack Of Our Lives” features (see also: this priceless Michael Gira piece). His answers far surpassed anything we could have expected, including highly personal accounts of how the Orb, Gas, Beastie Boys and Boston relate to different points in his life.

More details about Animal Collective‘s All Tomorrow’s Parties bill are available here. Check out a killer two-hour mix that starts with Orthrelm and ends with Zomby below…
