DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Battles’ FACT Mix, Featuring Unreleased Tracks From The Field, Hudson Mohawke and Gui Boratto

John Stanier of Battles - Live @ Pitchfork FestivalOne thing many people don’t realize about Battles drummer John Stanier—despite his stints powering the pistons of much more muscular bands like Helmet and the Mike Patton side project Tomahawk—is what a huge techno head he is. He’s so into the music, in fact, that we had him DJ a Battles/Black Dice after-party a few years ago, a task he pretty much owned for an entire hour.

As it turns out, Stanier is tight with the folks at Kompakt and was actually living in Germany the last time we checked, cutting a Cologne ‘supergroup’ record with the Field, Ada, Jörg Burger and a few other label staples in 2010. So it indeed makes sense that Stanier marked Battles’ new remix collection (Dross Glop) with a proper FACT mix this morning, one that includes a trio of unreleased Hudson Mohawke tracks and exclusives from Michael Mayer and Junior Boys. Grab it below, alongside the full tracklisting…

1MM: Pitchfork Festival Photos, Day One, F/ Animal Collective, Battles, Guided By Voices, Thurston Moore and Neko Case’s Arm

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

So the first day of this year’s Pitchfork Festival was a relatively sedate one, punctuated by such attention-seizing moments as the wall of noise/heavy bass lines that bookended James Blake‘s precious but prickly version of “The Wilhelm Scream”; the sloshed college rock of Guided By Voices; an absurdly tight Battles set that made us finally believe in their Tyondai-free lineup; and some new Animal Collective song that ended in Panda Bear clobbering his kit like an angry Muppet.

More to come as the weekend goes on. For now, some photos…

Battles Reveal Guest List, Release Date For ‘Gloss Drop’ Album

It’s taken them four years and the loss of one estranged band member (Tyondai Braxton), but Battles have finally wrapped up their second proper LP. Due out June 7 through Warp, Gloss Drop features 12 new tracks and such special guests as Matias Aguayo, Gary Numan, and Boredoms’ Yamantaka Eye.

Speaking to Pitchfork recently, guitarist/bassist Dave Konopka said the record features “a good spectrum—some shorter songs, some poppier songs, some total rock songs, some more out-there songs, some manic songs, a semi hip-hop-vibe song.” He also tackled the topic of Braxton’s absence head on, saying, “I’m not going to candy-coat it—the situation was kind of dark. The three of us argued and were pissed off after Ty left but we were like, ‘Fuck that. That’s chapter’s closed. Let’s move on.’ From there, the most important thing was to maintain the integrity of what the band means to us and to carry on with it.”
