DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Battles’ FACT Mix, Featuring Unreleased Tracks From The Field, Hudson Mohawke and Gui Boratto

John Stanier of Battles - Live @ Pitchfork FestivalOne thing many people don’t realize about Battles drummer John Stanier—despite his stints powering the pistons of much more muscular bands like Helmet and the Mike Patton side project Tomahawk—is what a huge techno head he is. He’s so into the music, in fact, that we had him DJ a Battles/Black Dice after-party a few years ago, a task he pretty much owned for an entire hour.

As it turns out, Stanier is tight with the folks at Kompakt and was actually living in Germany the last time we checked, cutting a Cologne ‘supergroup’ record with the Field, Ada, Jörg Burger and a few other label staples in 2010. So it indeed makes sense that Stanier marked Battles’ new remix collection (Dross Glop) with a proper FACT mix this morning, one that includes a trio of unreleased Hudson Mohawke tracks and exclusives from Michael Mayer and Junior Boys. Grab it below, alongside the full tracklisting…

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Gang Gang Dance, “MindKilla (Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry Remix)”

Do we even need to sell you on the following free remix, an eight-minute romp through the warped, piano-chased mind of the one-and-only Lee “Scratch” Perry?

Here’s what Gang Gang Dance multi-instrumentalist Brian DeGraw had to say about it if so: “I feel blessed—like ACTUALLY blessed—to have made some form of musical communion with LSP. I think about him a lot in day to day life but never really imagined our paths would cross in any other way. And I really have to give it up for anyone who gets handed a song about fear and turns it into a club banger about eating cops. Perfect.”

“I did have a great fun in the studio in Negril (Jamaica) recreating the riddim,” the man himself added in a press release. “The ingeneers and people around also enjoyed the vibes and the great voice of [frontwoman] Lizzi [Bougatsos]. All the blessings for the remix from LSP.”

True. You can grab both versions of “MindKilla” after the jump, along with a ton of tour dates and a video directed by Shoji Goto of the Boredoms…

COMING SOON: Gang Gang Dance, ‘Eye Control’

The Artist/Album: Gang Gang Dance, Eye Control (4AD, May 10)

The Details: Like the DJ sets of multi-instrumentalist Brian DeGraw, Eye Control is a sprawling affair, leaving trails of techno, funk, disco, pop, and space age something or other behind in its pursuit of post-everything bliss. The thing’s a grower in every way, too—if you can make it past the opening track’s patience-testing intro, that is. Succumb to the world that’s being painstakingly handcrafted here and you’ll find everything from a delightfully strange duet with Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor (“Romance Layers”) to the kind of stone-cold jams you’d expect Jim Henson to hear in his head during his Labyrinth days.

You can wade through “Glass Jar”‘s 11 minutes of madness below. It’ll also be available as part of a limited AA 12” single on April 4…

You may remember XXXchange from his stellar DJ set at OSCILLATIONS last year or his remix/production work for the Kills, Spank Rock, Panda Bear, Thom Yorke and, well, the list goes on. He’s a busy guy. And you can now add Win Win to that resume. A trio rounded out by longtime friends Chris Devlin (of Devlin and Darko) and A/V artist Ghostdad, Win Win dropped their self-titled debut through Vice Records this week. VIDEO: Go Behind the Scenes of Gang Gang Dance’s New Album

1MM: The Shots That Survived the Creators Project, Including Interpol, Die Antwoord, Salem and Gang Gang Dance

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

The good news first: when judged against the godawful nature of most corporate gigs, Intel and Vice’s Creators Project was a clumsy success, a gathering of good intentions featuring three functional performance spaces, artists that ran the gamut from grandiose (Interpol) to gimmicky (Die Antwoord), and installations that turned Milk Studios into a theme park for potheads, gamers and anyone who likes pretty lights, self-titled included. On the other hand, pairing free liquor with poor sight lines and sub-par sound just doesn’t do it for us anymore, with a few exceptions, one of which—yet another breakthrough set for one of Brooklyn’s rising bands—will be in a separate post later today. For now, here’s some visual documentation of what went down.
