Robert Pollard Denies Guided By Voices Breakup, Insists They’re Working On Another Album Called ‘Class Clown Spots A UFO’

Sorry for any confusion. Here’s an updated on GBV‘s reported breakup, via Robert Pollard’s Facebook:

Guided by Voices have not split up and continue to work on new material together. In addition to the album release of Let’s Go Eat the Factory for January, the band are at work on another album, Class Clown Spots A UFO, which will be released in May. Robert Pollard will also be releasing a solo album, Mouseman Cloud in March.

So there you have it. While the guys apparently can’t get along on stage, they’re doing just fine in the studio. Here’s one of their recent singles for further evidence of that…

Guided By Voices Break Up Before Their Album Even Comes Out, The Afghan Wigs Reunite For ATP Shows in London and Asbury Park

The Afghan Wigs

First off: the good news. The Afghan Wigs have confirmed two reunion shows for All Tomorrow’s Parties, one at London’s Alexandra Palace on May 27, and a headlining set on September 22 at ATP’s Asbury Park edition, which will be curated by Greg Dull himself. While details are slim on the latter aside from tickets being on sale next month, the former is on sale now and highly recommended considering that the first day of  I’ll Be Your Mirror 2012 includes Slayer performing Reign In Blood in its entirety, and supporting sets from Sleep, Melvins, Wolves in the Throne Room, Yob and more artists that will rattle your rib cage.

And now for the bad news: Guided By Voices have broken up, scrapping their headlining ATP appearance and all 2012 shows. Here’s an official statement:

1MM: Pitchfork Festival Photos, Day One, F/ Animal Collective, Battles, Guided By Voices, Thurston Moore and Neko Case’s Arm

So the first day of this year’s Pitchfork Festival was a relatively sedate one, punctuated by such attention-seizing moments as the wall of noise/heavy bass lines that bookended James Blake‘s precious but prickly version of “The Wilhelm Scream”; the sloshed college rock of Guided By Voices; an absurdly tight Battles set that made us finally believe in their Tyondai-free lineup; and some new Animal Collective song that ended in Panda Bear clobbering his kit like an angry Muppet.

More to come as the weekend goes on. For now, some photos…

Cymbals Eat Guitars Sign To Barsuk, Share Guided By Voices Cover

Cymbals Eat Guitars have decided to break from the self-released route on their long-awaited second LP. Due out later this year through Barsuk, the as-yet-untitled effort will be tracked with producer John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile, Dinosaur Jr.) in the next couple months. Here’s a completely unrelated Guided By Voices cover (“Gleemer”) from a tribute album that’s also on the way in 2011…

I WAS THERE: Our Review of Guided By Voices’ Reunion Show At Terminal 5

Words and Photos by Aaron Richter

Guided by Voices, 2003; Columbia, Missouri. One of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen. It was an entirely ridiculous show akin to seeing Cheeseburger in a sloppy Brooklyn basement; nothing in the venue was left undoused in beer. Touring Earthquake Glue, Pollard arrived in town on a Monday night to play for a sparse turnout of around maybe 50–75 people, most of whom ended up onstage toward the set’s end. The group played for three hours; Pollard drank a full bottle of tequila, at least seven beers and—before the night’s final song, at that point pretty much reduced to a mumbling mess—announced that he was hitting the bars and that anyone was welcome to join him. We left drenched in sweat and beer (and blood, in the case of my friend, who’d gashed his hand open on a broken bottle).
