LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: John Maus, ‘A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material’

John Maus - 'A Collection of Rarities and Unreleased Material'

The Artist/Album: John Maus, A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material (Domino, 2012)

Our Review: Nearly a decade of MySpace memories and previously unreleased pop moves is uncovered in this compilation, which reveals how fully formed John Maus’ gleaming synths and moonlit melodies were straight out of the gate. Whether he’s howling about “castles in the grave” or assuring us he’s not a cannibal at the top of his lungs, it takes some serious skills to sound this strange.

Available At: Amazon · Insound · iTunes

VIDEO: Watch John Norris Interview John Maus

Fresh off revisiting the twilight zone tracks of last year’s We Must Become We Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves LP, we just stumbled upon this Noisevox interview between John Maus and former MTV staple John Norris. Our favorite part: when Maus says he’s “flattered to be with an institution…back when MTV actually played music, before it became un-ending praise for the situation as it stands, and the re-upification of despicable humanity, you know?”

We know, John; we know. For our own attempt at bottling Maus’ nervous energy, grab our twelfth issue in iPad/Android form here, or sample the embeddedable Web version below…

Domino's 'Smugglers Way' Zine

Now here’s an idea we wish we’d thought of for this year’s Record Store Day: pairing five, rainbow-colored Flexi discs with a limited zine like the one Domino’s produced with their side imprint Ribbon Music. Featuring cover art from Bjorn Copeland of Black Dice and the impeccable art direction of SEEN, it includes unreleased tracks from Cass McCombs, Real Estate, Dirty Projectors, Villagers and former s/t cover star John Maus. You can grab his contribution below…

Sandwell District Shutters Its Doors, Offers New Mix

Sandwell District, one of our favorite underground techno collectives of the past five years, has decided to stop releasing new records, sharing the following statement on their Tumblr:

Beginning the 31st of December, 2011, regular audio communications from Sandwell District will cease. All vinyl artifacts have been decommissioned. There is a possibility of future, albeit irregular, print communications with audio accompaniment. However, details—and indeed content—is uncertain at this moment in time. The Sandwell experiment will exist through live actions—which will continue to expand into new sonic territory—in addition to audio/print installations as previously witnessed in New York, Los Angeles, Gdansk, Bialystok, Berlin and London.

Stasis is death.

See you on the other side.

Lest anyone think Sandwell District won’t live up to their “stasis is death” promise, one of the group’s members has already posted a killer mix that may or may not hint at their next creative move, including s/t-approved cuts from John Maus, Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin and Death In June. Grab it below…

2011 IN REVIEW: Our Editor’s Top 10 Albums

By Andrew Parks

If you’re wondering why I’m filing my list so late this year, it’s simply because I can’t make up my damn mind. Depending on the day and my general mood, I’ve bumped and boosted at least 20 albums in and out of my Top 10. But that’s how we consume music now, isn’t it? By satisfying our immediate urges with streaming services and expandable hard drives, as well as the tactile pleasure of dropping a 180-gram slab of vinyl on a direct drive turntable.

Here are 10 records that survived a year of immediate discovery and indecision…

2011 IN REVIEW: Our Managing Editor’s Top 10 Albums

By Arye Dworken

Out of the whole self-titled staff, my taste tends to gravitate toward the poppier and the polished. But for me, that’s what makes being a part of this magazine so rewarding. Perhaps it fulfills the contrarian tendencies in me. Or maybe I’m glad that I can bring some diversity to the workplace. WINK!

CONTEST: Win Limited Vinyl and Concert Tickets From John Maus

Now that our new issue is finally out, we’d like to celebrate its release alongside John Maus’ latest LP, We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves. Maus is in town to play three shows this week, including an Other Music in-store at 8 and two stops with Puro Instinct. We’ve got a pair of tickets for his Glasslands gig later tonight. If you want them, E-mail our editor the answer to the following question: What kind of animal is staring at our writer and John near the end of his cover story? Since he’s got nothing better to do, he’ll randomly select a winner this afternoon.

For those of you who don’t live in New York, we’ve got two hand-numbered copies of Maus’ album; one will be given away via our Facebook page, and the other will be distributed through our Twitter account. Since we miss the days of sitting next to our radio, waiting to win Metallica tickets, both of those will be announced at random points over the next couple days. You’ll be given a little bit of time to answer questions there, too, so don’t panic!

In the meantime, let us know what you think of the issue and spread the word if you can!
