James Murphy Says He Passed On the Last Two Arcade Fire LPs, But Would Still Love To Work With Them and Soulwax

Just when we thought James Murphy had nothing left to say about LCD Soundsystem’s latest album and the laid-back road ahead, he had to go and tell BBC News that he almost worked with Arcade Fire…twice.

“I missed the opportunity to work with Arcade Fire in the studio on two albums in a row just because they were recording at the same time I did,” explained Murphy, “and that broke my heart ’cause we toured together. I consider them to be very good friends and I admire what they do and it would have been really fun to work with them.”

Murphy added that there “are a couple of projects that have been on the back burner for 10 years,” including in-house production gigs for his DFA imprint, a potential collaboration with Soulwax, and a return to remixes, one-off singles and weekly dance parties.

“I haven’t had the chance to just not have a plan,” Murphy said. “If I have an idea, and I write it down, and it goes in this pile of things I want to do. So this is just an opportunity to sit still for a minute, listen to my records at home again and get excited in a different way. I am still excited about what we do, but I want to find a new way of dealing with my time.” [BBC News]

BUY IT, BURN IT, SKIP IT: LCD Soundsystem, The Black Keys, Band of Horses

LCD Soundsystem @ Music Hall of Williamsburg

As we all know by now, new releases hit record store shelves and digital download services each Tuesday. That’s why self-titled presents the following every week: a new release you’d be stupid not to own (Buy It), one worth checking out if you’re the curious type (Burn It) and something you should avoid at all costs (Skip It). Simple, ain’t it?

COVER FLOW: The Stories Behind the Sleeve of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘This Is Happening’ LP

By Aaron Richter

I first met Ruvan Wijesooriya just a short while after I’d moved to New York; we were assigned to cover, of all bands, the Bravery recording their second album. At the time, I was familiar with Ruvan’s work—chronicling the city’s nightlife on film (always on film), and steadily emerging as a talented fashion and music photographer as well. We’ve remained friends ever since, always lending a hand to each other’s projects.

So I’ll be the first to admit I was sickly jealous when I got an e-mail from him this past summer saying that he was partying in Laurel Canyon, California, at the Mansion (yes, Rick Rubin’s Mansion) where James Murphy was recording the new LCD Soundsystem album. Ruvan has been a visual presence with DFA for years, and the cover of LCD’s latest, This Is Happening, features one of his images.

Since James & Co. are performing at Webster Hall tonight (two new tracks also just popped up online), I caught up with Ruvan to chat about his summer with LCD…

I WAS THERE: LCD Soundsystem Try Not To Lose Their Edge With the Kids At Music Hall of Williamsburg

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

In case you didn’t know, Thursday night marked the longest gap between LCD Soundsystem shows since James Murphy was spinning Can and Chic at APT until 5 a.m. And while the DFA don made sure to remind us of this fact at least 10 times, he didn’t have to. After all, LCD’s loose/loopy set at the Music Hall of Williamsburg was clearly a warm-up gig for bigger and not-quite-better places (playing opposite Jay-Z at Coachella, headlining two nights at Terminal 5). From a giddy “Yr City’s a Sucker” to the final slurred lines of “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down,” the overwhelming sense that we were witnessing a drunken dress rehearsal is exactly why the show worked so well; exactly why the Internet seekers and art-school Brooklynites in little jackets and borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered ’80s couldn’t…stop…dancing for a change.

From The Cure To KLF, Snag 50 Songs That Happen To Have ‘Love’ In Their Title

Richard Hell, the Rico Suave of Punk Rock

Since we love all of you more than life itself, the self-titled staff thought we’d spend the tail end of Valentine’s Day sharing our favorite “love” songs. And by that, we simply mean that the word’s in every title. Needless to say, this led to some rather random selections, including a self-indulgent Cure remix, rare groove rock from Singapore and Germany, dashes of dubstep and Italo disco, and some mighty fine music from PJ Harvey, David Byrne, Animal Collective, Spiritualized and many, many more.

By the way, if you’re an artist that disapproves of this message, simply tell us and we’ll gladly swipe your selection out for someone else.

PEEP SHOW: LCD Soundsystem, “New York I Love You” (W/ Director’s Commentary!)

LCD Soundsystem @ Coachella 2007

While we get the appeal of skateboarding dogs and Mentos, the exploding freshmaker—if you’re easily amused, that is—self-titled thinks the following video is actually worth a million views. The product of a long-shelved idea by British director Simon Owens, LCD Soundsystem’s unofficial “New York I Love You” video fuses two of our favorite things: hand puppets and hating on New York’s glossy post-Giuliani-isms. We caught up with Owens via E-mail to talk about the making of “The Muppets Take Manhattan, Part Deux.”

One note: be sure to watch the entire clip, as it features a mind-fuck ending that’d make M. Night Shyamalan proud.
