The Artist/Album: No Joy, Ghost Blonde (Mexican Summer, 2010)
A Short Review: The Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner must have had one thought while mixing No Joy’s debut album: ‘And I thought we were loud.’ By wallowing in pools of distortion and smothering their candied melodies in asymmetric arrangements, the Montreal-based duo keeps listeners guessing far more than your average pedal-pusher. Hypnotic and harsh in equal measure, it’s like weathering a storm in a bomb shelter, only to find that everything’s okay after all.

So Mexican Summer appears to be turning into a bit of a shoegaze label as of late, between the Black Ryder’s recent record (Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride) and now this, a Sune Rose Wagner-mixed slice of natty noise from No Joy.
