TEST PRESSING: Listen To JD Twitch’s Old Mount Florida Project, Alongside a Live Set From San Francisco and Some Remixes

While we’ve been a fan of JD Twitch‘s edits and Optimo-related DJ sets for years, we had no idea he was part of a Matador-endorsed duo called Mount Florida in the late ’90s/early ’00s. Thank the power of Soundcloud, then, for reintroducing us to the duo’s Arthur Russell cover (“A Little Lost”) and a lengthy slice of dub-infused techno called “Riot On Jamaica Street.” You can check out both long-overlooked EP tracks after the jump, along with some remixes and a recent live JD Twitch set from San Francisco’s Honey Soundsystem party…

RVNG Recruit Blondes, JD Twitch, Oneohtrix Point Never and More For 30th Anniversary Harald Grosskopf Reissue

RVNG has announced its first full-on reissue: a 30th anniversary look at the MiniMoog-driven solo debut of Harald Grosskopf. Best known as the beat-dropping backbone of Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze and Cosmic Jokers, Grosskopf delved into the deep end of the analog spectrum on Synthesist—a realm that’ll sound familiar to fans of such new-school space cadets as Emeralds and Oneohtrix Point Never.

Maybe that’s why RVNG also produced a Re-Syntheist CD of reinterpreted Grosskopf songs, including contributions from Blondes, Arp, Stellar Om Source, 0PN and seven others. The compilation is available alongside the vinyl version of Synthesist, with both records available separately on digital stores. Pre-order here now, and check out the full tracklisting and a free MP3 after the jump…

HAPPY ENDING: We Toast Optimo’s Final Night At the Sub Club With Five of Our Favorite Mixes and a Stack of Old Flyers

“And now silence,” wrote DJ/producer Rory Phillips late Sunday night. “R.I.P. Optimo (Espacio). The last of the U.K.’s great weekly parties.”

Phillips should know. As one of the residents of London’s long-running (and dearly-missed) Trash night alongside Erol Alkan, Phillips spent nearly a decade being the British answer to JG Wilkes and JD Twitch. That’d be two of self-titled‘s favorite DJs of all time, the guys who opened our ears to Arthur Russell, Sun City Girls, Carl Craig, Lee Hazelwood, the Langley School Music Project, Black Devil Disco Club, Ricardo Villalobos, the Bush Tetras, Basic Channel, Os Mutantes, etc. etc. And that was just one double-disc mix: 2004′s How to Kill the DJ [Part Two], one of the few CDs we absolutely refuse to remove from our collection. Why? Because it’s a crash course on every (sub)genre known to man, mixed impeccably and without a trace of snobbery.

That’s the thing about Optimo—despite their ridiculous record collections, they’ve never looked down at us. They’ve remained educators through and through, from such equally essential mixes as Walkabout, Psyche Out and Sleepwalk to side projects like Wilkes’ Naum Gabo duo and Twitch’s Betty Botox alias. Not to mention the following five Podcasts, which we’ve uploaded along with and some of our favorite flyers from Optimo’s 13-year run. For the full story behind Optimo, be sure to check out this excellent Resident Advisor feature.

From the Black Lips to the Black Angels, They Blinded Us With Record Covers

The Pitchfork-fueled fervor behind Animal Collective’s new Merriweather Post Pavilion album got us thinking about eye-singeing record sleeves—the kind of potential Magic Eye paintings that induce severe migraines in some viewers. Here’s what we came up with, including the freshly-unveiled cover for the Black Lips’ latest LP, 200 Million Thousand. (If you haven’t read it already, here is our cover story on the band from last year as well.)

We’ll keep adding art as we think of more epileptic layouts …
