1MM: Pitchfork Festival Photos, Day One, F/ Animal Collective, Battles, Guided By Voices, Thurston Moore and Neko Case’s Arm

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

So the first day of this year’s Pitchfork Festival was a relatively sedate one, punctuated by such attention-seizing moments as the wall of noise/heavy bass lines that bookended James Blake‘s precious but prickly version of “The Wilhelm Scream”; the sloshed college rock of Guided By Voices; an absurdly tight Battles set that made us finally believe in their Tyondai-free lineup; and some new Animal Collective song that ended in Panda Bear clobbering his kit like an angry Muppet.

More to come as the weekend goes on. For now, some photos…

Panda Bear Takes Us On a Tour of His Record Collection

Photo: Brian DeRan

Panda Bear recently stopped by NPR‘s studios to share some tracks from his upcoming Tomboy LP (available April 12th through Paw Tracks), as well as some of his favorite records from over the years.

As it turns out, we expanded upon the latter in our current issue, asking the Animal Collective alum to fill in the blanks for one of our “Soundtrack Of Our Lives” features (see also: this priceless Michael Gira piece). His answers far surpassed anything we could have expected, including highly personal accounts of how the Orb, Gas, Beastie Boys and Boston relate to different points in his life.

COMING SOON: Panda Bear, ‘Tomboy’

The Artist/Album: Panda Bear, Tomboy (April 12, Paw Tracks)

The Details: Using a series of limited singles as the template for his fourth solo album, Panda Bear recorded a couple more cuts at his Lisbon studio and asked former Spacemen 3 guitarist Sonic Boom to mix the entire affair. The result elevates the sample-driven pop structures of Person Pitch to another level—one that incorporates everything from dub-derived drum patterns to spacey synths.

Animal Collective’s Paw Tracks imprint has confirmed an April 19 release date for Panda Bear‘s long-awaited Tomboy LP. Details are slim beyond that, although a press release confirmed the following:

“Over the past six months or so, Panda Bear has released a series of vinyl singles on different labels, including Domino, Paw Tracks, and Fat Cat, with the final single forthcoming on Kompakt.  The Tomboy album will be a compilation of these songs, along with new ones that have not been released. Additionally, all the songs have been added to and newly mixed with help from Sonic Boom to give the album a wonderfully rich and warm sound. stay tuned for more details.”

Get psyched, and let the Hipster Runoff jokes commence.

Panda Bear’s Camo Sneaker Completes Animal Collective Series

Keep announced the final shoe in its Keep + Animal Collective collaboration this morning, a “Camo Ramos” sneaker designed by Panda Bear. Available for pre-order here, it—like the rest of the series—includes a cassette of unreleased music and benefits the Socorro Island Conservation Fund.

“I’ve always liked camouflage patterns,” Panda Bear said in a press release, “And I’d be lying if I said the idea of blending into the environment and becoming invisible didn’t excite me a bit.”
