Remember Kemado Records? Yep, us neither. That’s because Mexican Summer—and to a lesser extent, the Ford & Lopatin-curated Software Label—has gradually eclipsed its sister label in its sheer volume of releases, records that celebrate artists outside of the psych-rock/’hipster-metal’ corner Kemado painted itself into. (Why, just this week Kemado put out a Pink Floyd-y LP called Center of the Sun.)
This change couldn’t be more apparent in Mexican Summer’s spring release schedule, a progression of eagerly anticipated LPs from the likes of Light Asylum, Peaking Lights and Best Coast. Have a listen to new and old tracks from the Brooklyn imprint in the hefty 15-track sampler below…
In what’s quickly becoming a crowded spring release schedule for Mexican Summer, Peaking Lights have lined up their latest LP for a June 19th release. Inspired in part by their recent move to L.A. and the birth of the married couple’s son Mikko, Lucifer was self-produced during a month-long Brooklyn session with engineer Al Carlson (Oneohtrix Point Never, Yeasayer, Ford & Lopatin).
“To us this record is about play and playfulness, unconditional love, rhythms and pulses, creation and vibration,” Aaron Coyes—who’s rounded out by Indra Dunis in the groove-locked duo—said in a press statement.
As for how that evil title of theirs may fit into the album’s sound, Coyes added, “All of our record titles have come to us in dreams, daydreams and epiphanies. Lucifer sat so strong with us. It means ‘Venus, bearer of light’ and is the first sign of the sunrise. There are some major astrological and astronomical events involving Venus in this year of 2012.”
Have an early listen below by sampling the first installment in a planned series of mixtapes that sneak new songs in with some of Peaking Lights’ favorite influences. Kind of like the exclusive s/t tape they shared last year…

If there’s one thing we learned from compiling the artist curated lists in our year-end issue, it’s what a serious crate digger Aaron Coyes is. As on-point as everyone else’s suggestions were, the Peaking Lights multi-instrumentalist went so obscure we spent several hours finding samples of all his picks for our enhanced iPad edition.
Have a listen and a look at what we’re talking about below, right alongside a mix Coyes just posted today…
