Pete Swanson On … ‘Police Academy’, Columbia’s Nursing Program, ’90s Punk Shows, Georges Perec, and His Roommates

Pete Swanson live Recording Under the Influence is a recurring self-titled feature where we ask artists to ignore their musical inspirations for a minute and share what really went into the making of a particular record.

In the case of Pete Swanson—who just released his latest torture chamber techno EP, Punk Authority, on Oneohtrix Point Never’s Software imprint—that means everything from the so-bad-it’s-brilliant storyline of Police Academy 2 to something as serious as pursuing an accelerated degree in nursing from Columbia…

WATCH/LISTEN: Pete Swanson Announces New ‘Punk Authority’ EP

Pete Swanson

Never one to sit still for too long, Pete Swanson has lined up his latest release since leaving Yellow Swans and his longtime home Portland behind for a life of charred techno beats in the bowels of Brooklyn. Due out March 12th through Ford & Lopatin’s Software Recording Co. imprint, Punk Authority features four new tracks that were cut on a simple synth/tape setup and inspired by everything from Police Academy to Detroit’s infamous Underground Resistance collective.

Check out its lead-off video below—the scorched earth single “Life Ends At 30″— and if you’re in Europe, be sure to check out one of Swan’s upcoming one-off dates with Mark Fell’s Sensate Focus alias, Lee Gamble and Raime…

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 106: An Exclusive Mix By … Pete Swanson

Pete Swanson

Words and Mix by Pete Swanson

There’s a lot on this mix that has commanded my attention recently and has translated into concerns in my own music. In the last year, I’ve mainly been interested in real oddball takes on musique concrete (the extremely rough Schaffer track and the Akos Rozmann track) and classical electronic music (Guy Riebel). I’ve also been digging into a lot of electronic dance music (Zomby, Traxman, etc.) and hip-hop (mostly not included, but you can count Death Grips to some degree) in the last year or two. Everything is represented on here.

LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Pete Swanson, ‘Man With Potential’

The Artist/Album: Pete Swanson, Man With Potential (Type, 2011)

The Reason(s) Why We Can’t Stop Listening: Like Prurient without the post-hardcore howling and blood-stained poetry, Pete Swanson’s first wide release since Yellow Swans’ 2008 split is aimed at post-apocalyptic dance floors. Look past the producer’s avalanche of crumbled samples and arrhythmic wreckage, however, and you’ll find that Man With Potential isn’t just techno that terrifies. It’s actually quite melodic, like a malfunctioning arcade machine that can’t help but split out bit-crushed symphonies.

Quite a few records logged repeat listens on our office stereo this year. Here’s one of them…

PRIMER: Yellow Swans

Some people complain about never seeing Nirvana or the nose candy peak of the Stones; us, we’re a little sore that we never succumbed to Yellow Swans. The undisputed noise circuit champions announced their retirement nearly two years ago, and while we’d heard their name spoken in hushed, reverential tones before, self-titled didn’t stumble upon the weight of their work until a few months ago. That’d be the very second we heard Going Places, a coffin-nailing collection that has absolutely engulfed our office stereo and subway routine in recent weeks.

As you’ll see in the following Yellow Swans guide—featuring six must-listens, hand selected by the guys themselves, Gabriel Saloman and Pete Swanson—their best music finds a delicate balance between sensory deprivation and sensory overload. And we simply can’t get enough of it these days…
