Since The Depreciation Guild have a record release party in Brooklyn tonight and the band’s guitarist (Christoph Hochheim) used to DJ a radio show called “Vapor Trails,” we asked the guy to give us a Needle Exchange mix. What we didn’t expect was everything from underground beat conductors (Daedelux, Dimlite) to dashes of Ariel Pink, choice reissues and a street performer named the Space Lady. Oh, and as a bonus, we’ve also included a beat-heavy School of Seven Bells remix (scroll all the way down for that download).
The trio’s latest and-we-have-lift-off LP, Spirit Youth, is available now through Kanine.

As you might imagine, self-titled doesn’t condone drug use. However, if you choose to dabble in anything emotion-enhancing, be sure to save School of Seven Bells‘ 11-minute ambient pop epic “Sempiternal/Amaranth” for the second you start peaking. That happened to us once—right in the middle of Times Square after a serious S/T Survived session—and the experience was transcendent to say the least.

And now, self-titled gets all TMZ on SXSW’s ass! Well, not exactly. You’ll see.

As they revealed in our extensive cover story Q&A, School of Seven Bells played their first show at Tonic nearly two years ago, a gig where they “experimented in front of everyone.” Thanks to the revelatory archives of YouTube, we unearthed a clip from this very show. While the Deheza Sisters still carry “Sempiternal” with their heavenly harmonies—alongside Benjamin Curtis on buzzsaw guitar and backup vocals—we can see why that whole drummer thing didn’t work out.
To set up a point of comparison, we included the same song in another drastically-different set: our OSCILLATIONS party at (Le) Poisson Rouge a couple months back …

THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS: Alejandra Deheza (School of Seven Bells), Madeline Davy and John Pugh of Free Blood, Claudia Deheza and Benjamin Curtis (SVIIB)
As you might have noticed last week—when our self-titled widget switched from a bare-chested Jay Reatard to an unforeseen pairing of Free Blood and School of Seven Bells—we’ve finally unveiled our third digital issue. As always, we encourage you to view it in full-screen mode (the option is on the far right part of the toolbar) and keep your eye out for embedded links. Feel free to forward what’s inside, too …

FREE ASSOCIATION: Stream Prefuse 73′s ‘The Only She Chapters’ LP and Read Guillermo Scott Herren’s Track-By-Track Commentary

Free Association is a recurring self-titled feature where we go beyond simply streaming a new album (we’re looking at you NPR and Spinner!) and ask our favorite artists to share the stories behind their songs.
Up this week: Prefuse 73‘s new one, a profoundly haunted exploration of the ether within Guillermo Scott Herren’s ever-evolving sample banks. Not to mention the raw power of such vocalists as Zola Jesus, Angel Deradoorian, and Trish Keenan. Or as the producer puts it in the following exclusive, “Yes, it requires patience, but everything underneath is mutating and taking shapes of its own.”
Listen to The Only She Chapters late at night with the lights off and you’re headphones on blast and you’ll understand exactly what he means…Continue reading »
