DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Battles’ FACT Mix, Featuring Unreleased Tracks From The Field, Hudson Mohawke and Gui Boratto

John Stanier of Battles - Live @ Pitchfork FestivalOne thing many people don’t realize about Battles drummer John Stanier—despite his stints powering the pistons of much more muscular bands like Helmet and the Mike Patton side project Tomahawk—is what a huge techno head he is. He’s so into the music, in fact, that we had him DJ a Battles/Black Dice after-party a few years ago, a task he pretty much owned for an entire hour.

As it turns out, Stanier is tight with the folks at Kompakt and was actually living in Germany the last time we checked, cutting a Cologne ‘supergroup’ record with the Field, Ada, Jörg Burger and a few other label staples in 2010. So it indeed makes sense that Stanier marked Battles’ new remix collection (Dross Glop) with a proper FACT mix this morning, one that includes a trio of unreleased Hudson Mohawke tracks and exclusives from Michael Mayer and Junior Boys. Grab it below, alongside the full tracklisting…

LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Loops of Your Heart, ‘And Never Ending Lights’

Loops of Your Heart - 'And Never Ending Nights'The Artist/Album: Loops of Your Heart, And Never Ending Lights (Magazine, 2012)

A Short Review: Axel Willner’s first Loops of Your Heart LP breaks the windswept spell of his work as the Field for something far spacier. It’s as if the producer’s recent move to Berlin has led him down the same road as the city’s leading kosmische cadets, from the metronomic melodies of Neu! to the continental drift chords of Cluster. With two tracks that pass the 10-minute mark and lots of partly cloudy passages that are light on beats and heavy on atmospherics, this one’s definitely fit for red-eye flights and armchairs—a living room listen that lives up to the flawless, trance-inducing efforts of the Field.

2011 IN REVIEW: Our Editor’s Top 10 Albums

By Andrew Parks

If you’re wondering why I’m filing my list so late this year, it’s simply because I can’t make up my damn mind. Depending on the day and my general mood, I’ve bumped and boosted at least 20 albums in and out of my Top 10. But that’s how we consume music now, isn’t it? By satisfying our immediate urges with streaming services and expandable hard drives, as well as the tactile pleasure of dropping a 180-gram slab of vinyl on a direct drive turntable.

Here are 10 records that survived a year of immediate discovery and indecision…

LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: The Field, ‘Looping State of Mind’

The Artist/Album: The Field, Looping State of Mind (Kompakt, 2011)

The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: More locked grooves and gorgeous/grandiose tone paintings from the Swedish sample surgeon who redefined trance music for anyone who’d rather die than be caught with a Tiësto-clogged hard drive. As simple as it all sounds on the surface, every last track is an incredibly immersive, downright transcendent experience, helped in part by the iridescent instrumentation of Axel Willner’s ever-evolving live band. Floating hasn’t felt this good in forever.

PEEP SHOW: The Field Redeems Sophomore Slump With Trance-tastic Live Set, Including an Epic Version of “Over the Ice”

Look, we really wanted to LOVE The Field‘s second full-length record (Yesterday & Today), but let’s be honest: the thing simply isn’t as transcendent as his Kompakt debut, From Here We Go Sublime. That said, we were pleasantly surprised to see Axel Willner perform with a full band at Webster Hall on Saturday, bringing a laptop-less pulse to his endless epics. The following is a standout for sure…

As we all know by now, new releases hit record-store shelves and digital-download services each Tuesday.
