Snoop Dogg Set To Perform ‘Doggystyle’ At the First Ever Catalpa Festival, Which Also Happens to Feature a Flame-Spitting DJ Booth

Snoop DoggJust when you thought we might make it through a summer without a new festival promising a “truly authentic, fresh and unique musical experience” with decent food, Burning Man-like art installations, and DJs performing inside a “mind-blowing spire that shoots giant 30-foot flame balls from its peak,” the first-ever Catalpa Festival has done just that. Set to invade Randalls Island on July 28-29, “the year’s most unique and original music and lifestyle event” (their words, not ours) will feature sets from the Black Keys, TV on the Radio, AraabMUZIK, the Big Pink, and a host of others that happen to hit that elusive Coachella-on-a-budget demographic. Oh, and Snoop Dogg will be performing Doggystyle in full, ATP style.

2011 IN REVIEW: Our Managing Editor’s Top 10 Albums

By Arye Dworken

Out of the whole self-titled staff, my taste tends to gravitate toward the poppier and the polished. But for me, that’s what makes being a part of this magazine so rewarding. Perhaps it fulfills the contrarian tendencies in me. Or maybe I’m glad that I can bring some diversity to the workplace. WINK!

VIDEO: Watch TV On the Radio’s Full ‘Nine Types of Light’ Film

Via TV On the Radio‘s VEVO page:

Nine Types of Light is as much an album as it is a movie by TV on the Radio. The movie is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album. The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos. Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for Forgotten. Nine Types of Light, both the album and the movie are set to release on April 12, 2011.

FREE ASSOCIATION: Stream Beans’ New ‘End It All’ Album, Read His Track-By-Track Commentary and a Guide To Mystery Novels

As psyched as we were about the long-awaited return of Anti-Pop Consortium in late 2009, Beans’ new solo album (End It All, out Tuesday on Anticon) is even tighter, a real deal return to form featuring 13 fat-free collabs with such left field producers as Four Tet, In Flagranti, and Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino. All of which bring their A-game, as Beans name drops everyone from Paul Smith to Helen Mirren and treats “bullshit choruses” like the plague.

In the following Free Association, he breaks down the entire album alongside a virtual listening party and a classic feature from our fifth issue—a guide to mystery novels. New York, be sure to check Beans out this Wednesday at Santos Party House‘s official release party featuring Soft Circle, Bluebird, a rare set from Edan (!) and Paten Locke, and Anika on DJ duty…

He’ll contribute bass parts to the band’s fourth album, which is currently being recorded in Rich Costey’s (Franz Ferdinand, Interpol) L.A. studio.
