Animal Collective, Merriweather Post Pavilion (Domino)
This is a glorious piece of work–heartfelt and honest pop music with as much in common with Stockhausen as the Beach Boys. It’s hard to work out how they managed to cross the crooked bridge between pop and sonic art, but this album does it better than anything else released this year. – Michael Palmer
