Chino Moreno Releases Free EP Outside The Deftones, Draws Grammatically Challenged Comparisons To Witch House

You know what we’re not afraid to admit? The fact that we actually like a lot of Deftones songs; probably because Chino Moreno is a closeted Cure fan and has been known to lead the not-quite-nü-metal band in faithful covers of the Cocteau Twins, Jawbox, the Smiths and goddamn Duran Duran.

So it’s with this in mind that we take offense to the assertion that the singer just quietly released a witch-house EP. While the five free songs below punctuate their titles with Windings like a second wave Salem, the only sonic similarities between the side project and yesterday’s trend pieces are Moreno’s tendency to pepper his melancholic melodies with lean samples and icy synths. Which isn’t that surprising. After all, we’re talking about a guy who once recorded a trip-hop-ish album with Zach Hill, Rob Crow and Mary Timony here…
