LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: Autechre, ‘Incunabula’

The Artist/Album: Autechre, Incunabula (Warp, 1993)

The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: While some of Autechre’s songs are as subtle as a poison-tipped stick in the eye, the duo’s debut LP is a downright pleasant—save for the skittering, scampering samples of its “Basscadet” single—journey to the center of a cavern that’s lined with liquified loops and sleek, shiny synth lines. It’s not as ambient as the following year’s Amber album, but that doesn’t make Incunabula any less of a landmark release in the early stages of “intelligent techno.”
