LONG PLAYER OF THE DAY: DJ Sprinkles, ‘Midtown 120 Blues’

The Artist/Album: DJ Sprinkles, Midtown 120 Blues (Mule Musiq, 2009)

The Reason(s) We Can’t Stop Listening: Terre Thaemlitz‘s elusive LP debut as DJ Sprinkles topped Resident Advisor’s year-end list in 2009 thanks to its loose definition of deep house. Reaching well beyond a dancefloor-driven need for hands-in-the-air hooks or rhythmic revelry, Thaemlitz taps his own dreams and desires throughout some of the most human dance tracks we’ve ever heard. That’s especially true on “Grand Central Part 2 (72 Hrs. By Rail From Missouri),” a beat-less collage of chirping crickets, echo-drenched soul samples, and droning minor chords. Beautiful stuff, really.
