If you’re like us and have fond memories of Jason Forrest—the Cock Rock Disco auteur who spent the mid ’00s maiming choice samples like a much lesser-known Girl Talk—then it’s time to start paying attention to Craig Clouse’s recent output as Shit and Shine. Since signing to Powell’s increasingly excellent Diagonal imprint and releasing a self-titled 12” last year, Clouse has turned his scenery-chewing tactics towards music you can kinda dance to. It’s as if he told the many drummers—up to 10 at a time—that often back Shit and Shine onstage to take a hike because he’s got an overstuffed MPC and some junk-shop synths now.
Not that you’ll be able to immediately identify much on the Powder Horn LP that’s due out next Monday. As you’re about to hear on the self-titled premiere “PG 13,’’ Clouse (see also: the amp-obliterating band Todd) isn’t about to go easy on us after all these years. He’s simply found a rhythm that works for him—one that’s spiked with oddly catchy samples and glassy dance-not-dance grooves…
