NEEDLE EXCHANGE 036: An Exclusive Mix By … Soft Metals

Photo: Jamen Lee

A few weeks ago, we told you about Soft Metals’ debut EP (The Cold World Melts), “a perfectly mastered slab of white vinyl that sounds like Glass Candy…if they shed their slo-mo disco skin and decided to go for our collective jugular on the dancefloor.”

Said record has quickly become one of our favorite extended players of the year—five tracks that could have easily crept into Mute’s early catalog. Since the Portland-based duo is about to invade New York for a series of live/DJ appearances—including Wierd’s weekly party at Home Sweet Home tonight and Bruar Falls on Friday—we asked singer/multi-instrumentalist Patricia Hall to pass a Needle Exchange mix this way.

In a rare move, she actually tracked her hour-long mix live, reminding us of what it means to actually blend records properly. Beyond that, Hall also was nice enough to share a soon-to-be-released Chromatics cut and a recent HEALTH remix that didn’t quite make it onto the band’s recent Disco2 compilation. See you near the smoke machine tonight…

RECORDING UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Ellen Allien

Recording Under the Influence is a recurring self-titled feature where we ask artists to ignore their musical inspirations for a minute and share what really went into the making of a particular record. Ellen Allien keeps things simple in her guide to Dust, giving us a few clues as to how some of the album’s more polarizing moments—like the beat-flecked balladry of “Sun the Rain”—came about.

The BPitch Control boss also shares her love of long nights/mornings in Berlin, a place that’s helped her find love and Dust’s first single. Speaking of Allien’s longtime home, you can check out her city guide from our first issue here.

PEEP SHOW: Ellen Allien Reminds Us Of Our First ‘Rave’

Way back in the first issue of self-titled, we asked Ellen Allien to share some of her favorite spots in Berlin. In the years since, she’s continued to crank out fashion collections, mixes (Watergate 05 being the latest) and a couple singles leading up to the May 25 release of her fifth proper LP, Dust. The following flashback-inducing teaser—personally, it reminds us of warehouse raves in Upstate New York, but hey, that’s just us—is taken from the moonlit techno track “Our Utopie.” Check it out after the jump, along with a trio of rare stateside appearances…

Bpitch Control’s been around for 10 years? Already? Indeed. Just ask label owner Ellen Allien, a world-renowned producer/DJ that also happens to be a dominating force in dance music’s big boys club, from her rock-solid roster to a clothing line that’s as minimal as her techno tunes. Touring the states with labelmate Thomas Muller—a seriously underrated Parisian DJ that now lives in Berlin—Allien celebrated Bpitch’s first decade at Studio B on Friday night. Also on the bill: Gui Boratto, a Brazilian architect-turned-beat conductor who’s still riding high on his last record’s success (2007’s Chromophobia)—right on the eve of his second Kompakt full-length, Take My Breath Away.
