Portishead Member Readies Guitar Orchestra Version of ‘In C’

[FACT] Geoff Barrow’s Invada Records imprint has finally revealed the release date for Adrian Utley’s Guitar Orchestra rendition of Terry Riley’s In C. Due out September 30th, the CD/DVD release was recorded live at Bristol’s St. Georges Hall last February, featuring the Portishead producer/multi-instrumentalist in front of 24 musicians, including PJ Harvey sideman John Parrish, four organ players, and a bass clarinetist.

“I’ve been exploring the sonic possibilities of massed guitars for a while now in various contexts from pure noise to the sacred choral music of Arvo Pärt,” explains Utley. “So it was interesting to see what would happen if we had 20 electric guitars plus organs playing In C. It is an amazing piece of writing and original thought. A new free idea of organised group playing. The beginnings of what we know as minimalism.”
