SONG OF THE DAY: Batillus, “Concrete (Andy Stott Remix)”

When we saw Andy Stott play Red Bull Music Academy’s New York run earlier this year, he started his live set with what sounded like a muddy death-metal remix, which made the otherwise upbeat crowd pause and wonder what they’d just wandered into. The move established a very specific mood—one that’s drained of color and dusted in ash, a slick move considering the producer brought the energy in the room back up to a fever pitch by the end, as he blended jagged bits of drum ‘n’ bass with doses of moody dance music Stott’s been known to call “knackered house.”

As it turns out, the remix that dragged us all through the dirt that night was rooted in a chance encounter with the Brooklyn doom band Batillus. It’s streaming in full below, just in time for a one-sided vinyl release from Modern Love and promise of new Stott material in the months ahead…
