Tag: Florence and the Machine
When we decided to put Florence + the Machine on our cover a couple years ago, the reason wasn’t the strength of her songs—she was still finishing her debut album at the time—so much as her riveting live show. Despite having nothing but a pair of promising singles to her name, the singer already seemed like a fully formed star as she played one of the main stages at Iceland’s Airwaves Festival. That feeling has only gotten stronger with time, of course, as evidenced by some of the new songs that Florence debuted at the Creators Project festival in Brooklyn this past weekend. Check them out below (via Consequence of Sound), along with our story if you’re curious about where her head was at in the final stages of recording Lungs…
Well here’s something unexpected, via Florence + the Machine‘s Facebook page:
Flo has been busy at work finishing up her second album and the great news is it has been completed ahead of schedule meaning we can release the record a week earlier! The album will now be available from October 31 in the UK, if you haven’t pre-ordered your copy yet head to Flotique now. It is available in Deluxe, Standard and LP formats plus every pre-order comes with a free limited edition poster print. We’ll have more news on the album coming very soon.
Check out Flo’s very first U.S. cover story—an intimate look at the singer in the months surrounding her universally acclaimed debut—below…
We’re not sure if this means Florence and the Machine‘s next album is on the way sooner than we thought or not, but my oh my has the singer grown since our cover story forever ago…
In case you don’t keep up with Florence and the Machine‘s Lady GaGa-like popularity in merry old England, the following new song was captured live at London’s Hammersmith Apollo recently. Between her two sold-out nights at Terminal 5 this week and the bound-to-be-a-hit-single status of “Strangeness and Charm,” it looks like our former cover star has finally, truly arrived. Check it (courtesy of revengerknight92′s YouTube channel) after the jump, along with said cover story…
“Heavy In Your Arms” is taken from the Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack. Check out our Florence and the Machine cover story here.
Words by Kim Taylor Bennett
Florence Welch doesn’t really do silence. But at the moment, she’s hushed, contemplating her recent Brit Award, the British equivalent of a Grammy. The win is an enviable accolade for any artist, but for Welch—who performs under the name Florence and the Machine—it’s quite surreal because the 22-year-old singer has only released three singles. Launched in 2008, the Critics’ Choice Award is appointed to an artist who industry bods predict will make it big in the upcoming year. Predictions came true this past year as winner Adele achieved both critical and commercial success. But essentially, the award is a prize for hype.
“It is very abstract: an award for something we think you might do well at?” Welch questions skeptically. “I sort of feel like someone who walked in the back door, someone who’s there by accident. I feel slightly out of place.”

In case you didn’t notice, our daily site went through some serious changes last night, as we scrapped our original design for a photo-driven Paper Tiger look that isn’t so damn cluttered and confusing. A toast, then: to us, and our continued efforts to “reclaim the blogosphere” from self-made critics and dinosaurs that just…won’t…die.
To celebrate our new digs, we’re unloading a ton of free stuff on our Twitter feed and brand new Facebook page. Among the spoils are:
