THE SELF-TITLED INTERVIEW: Oneohtrix Point Never

Interview by Andrew Parks

Now that he’s gotten featured in The New Yorker; handed the keys to Mexican Summer‘s in-house studio and a vanity imprint with the other half of Ford & Lopatin; and wrapped his most universally acclaimed record (Replica) yet, it’s safe to say that Daniel Lopatin’s had a hell of a year. He’s also clearly exhausted from months of cross-continental touring, recording, zine-making and whatever else entails maintaining the self-stylized world of Oneohtrix Point Never. That said, Lopatin took the time to answer some probing questions via E-mail, although he avoided anything related to “hypnagogic pop” or “cosmic synth recordings.” We can’t blame him.

Have a look below, and be sure to check out Lopatin’s classic Needle Exchange mix here

FREE ASSOCIATION: Stream Ford & Lopatin’s ‘Channel Pressure’ LP and Read Their Track-By-Track Commentary

If you’ve ever fallen asleep with the TV on, only to wake up in the middle of the night screaming alongside a Richard Simmons commercial, then you have a general idea of the world Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) and Joel Ford (Tigercity) weaved together on their debut LP, Channel Pressure. A concept album cut under their alias Ford & Lopatin, it’s an “imaginary soundtrack for the adventures of Joey Rogers, mild-mannered teenager of the year 2082.”

Which is to say it sounds like a fever dream; caught somewhere in the twilight zone between R. Kelly and RoboCop, and written against a backdrop of poorly dubbed VHS tapes and the kind of woozy videos Lopatin occasionally produces for his “sunsetcorps” YouTube channel. (Our personal favorite: his chopped & screwed “Lady In Red” clip, which rescues the original’s hypnotic hook from the Top 40 trash bin.)

In the following exclusive, Ford & Lopatin share the stories behind their skewered pop songs, from the diamond-edged mixing desk work of Guillermo Scott-Herren (Prefuse 73) to the panic attacks and pink Cadillacs that inform Joey’s midnight movie storyline…

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Ford & Lopatin, “Emergency Room”

“Emergency Room” will be available on a limited “X-ray picture disc” April 26th, along with remixes by Gavin Russom and the Bug. Software/Mexican Summer will follow it up with the first Ford & Lopatin full-length on June 7th.

Judging by their set alongside the album’s mixer (Prefuse 73) a few weeks ago, the thing’s going to be poppy as hell, the next logical step in Daniel Lopatin’s (Oneohtrix Point Never, Infinity Window) evolution from the noise scene to Betamax beats and laser-guided synth lines. We also hear that Autre Ne Veut—the How To Dress Well-like singer who opened up our 0PN release party last year—contributed some guest vocals (that might be him on this song, actually), so you can expect some twisted R&B vibes as well. For now, grab “Emergency Room” below, along with tour dates and a Channel Pressure tracklisting…

VIDEO: Ford & Lopatin Share ‘Channel Pressure’ Trailer

Well, it’s official: Ford & Lopatin, the Oneohtrix Point Never/Tigercity-related duo formerly known as Games, will release their debut album on June 7th through the duo’s Mexican Summer imprint, Software. More details about that label’s rather sweet deal can be found in a recent Altered Zones interview. We also ran exclusive mixes from both members last year. They can be found here and here.

We’ll also be reporting from Ford & Lopatin’s performance with Prefuse 73 later tonight, so follow our Twitter feed if you can’t wait to hear how all of this is going to sound.

NEEDLE EXCHANGE 045: An Exclusive Mix By … Games

(L to R: Joel Ford, Daniel Lopatin)

Words and Mix by Joel Ford of Games

I made a quick mix of electronic music for y’all. These jams have informed my taste for music appreciation, production, sound, and feel. These artists have been so crucial for me over the years and it’s pretty rad looking at them all lined up in a playlist. There’s an obvious contrast between the quick cuts of Max Tundra and Scritti Politti, and the lush ambient drone of Eno and OPN. I love it all. Hope you Dig. (Ed. Note: Go here for our exclusive Oneohtrix Point Never mix.)
