Determined to top last year’s candid shots from the Black Lips, Toro Y Moi and the Megaphonic Thrift, we passed out 10 disposable cameras at South by Southwest this year. Some went missing (Dan Deacon, Oneohtrix Point Never, La Sera and Yakuza, we’re looking at you!), but six eventually made their way back to self-titled‘s Brooklyn office, from a chain-polishing Kendrick Lamar to a deep end-diving Youth Lagoon. Check out our photo essay with the shots that survived down below, along with expanded photo albums at our Facebook page…

We’ve already professed our love for Cloud Nothings’ latest album with a tour of Dylan Baldi’s record collection, but the blustery, punk-not-punk spirit of Attack on Memory doesn’t fully hit you unless you see it performed live. That’s why we trekked across town to see the band play a late-night set at South by Southwest on Friday. The video below is taken from the night’s last song, a pit-pleasing version of “No Future, No Past”…

While we have to be in a certain mood—read: jacked on liters of mainlined Mountain Dew—to appreciate Dan Deacon’s music at home, there’s no denying the way his live sets flood your serotonin levels. Case in point: the pawn shop auteur’s headlining set at the Insound/Oh My Rockness day party on Thursday. Not content with sticking to his usual wall-breaking routine—chopping up samples and hyper-speed hooks right on the ground—Deacon also demanded a dance-off between pogoing fans and asked one of South by Southwest’s longtime booking agents to lead everyone in a synchronized dance routine. Check out a clip of the latter below…

NIKI & THE DOVE
Since self-titled is the product of three very different voices, we asked managing editor Arye Dworken for a second opinion on the South by Southwest guide we shared yesterday.
Here’s what he came up with…

Here are some artists we’re psyched to see at South By Southwest this year: Charli XCX, Oneohtrix Point Never, the War On Drugs, Matthew Dear, Youth Lagoon, Nicolas Jaar, Thee Oh Sees, Machinedrum, Light Asylum, Torche, Chelsea Wolfe, Blondes, Cloud Nothings, G-Side, King Tuff, Peaking Lights, Hudson Mohawke, Daedelus, Flying Lotus, Apparat, Coliseum, the Men, Nicolas Jaar, the Twilight Sad, Dax Riggs, and at least 20 others we forgot to mention.
Not to mention the 10 acts below, a mix of new and old artists that err on the not-so-damn-obvious side of things. Be sure to watch this space and our special Austin-centric Twitter account throughout the week for our complete SXSW coverage, including photo galleries, artist spotlights and show picks…
