Weyes Blood - 'Hang On'

If ‘freak-folk’ was still a thing, Weyes Blood would fit right in alongside Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and all the Laurel Canyon loons that made it cool to quote Vashti Bunyan about a decade ago. Especially in light of her spellbound LP The Innocents (Mexican Summer, October 21st). Aside from a few slight electronic flourishes or mangled tape loops (sublimated signs of the singer’s noise roots), songs like its lead single revolve around Natalie Mering’s sublime, multi-tracked melodies first and foremost. Fans of experimental folk sirens like Catherine Ribeiro take note; this should fit into your fall listening quite nicely.
