Alva Noto Tackles Null + Void’s Dave Gahan Collab, “Where I Wait”

Alva Noto

When Kurt Uenala managed to land Dave Gahan for one of the vocal collabs on Cryosleep—his debut LP under the name Null + Void—he didn’t leave the track on the cutting room floor once the record was wrapped. Uenala recruited a motley crew of like-minded producers for a remix series on HFN Music.

The third installment is set to drop this Friday, but we’re proud to present its main draw here: a synth-led surgical procedure by Alva Noto. Check it out below, along with some thoughts from Uenala and related music from the past year….

Carsten Nicolai has been on my radar for many years. I discovered him a decade ago in some documentary on electronic music. He was tweaking an EMS Synthi and the cold electrical sounds he formed and then surgically placed on a timeline to create his music were very beautiful and interesting. The repetitive but very sensible nature of his elaborate and tedious programing style fascinated me for years. So of course when I had something that was remotely worthy of his touch, we reached out and am really happy with his interpretation of the song.
