Sonja Tofik Announces
Debut Album, Anomi

Sonja Tofik — a longtime member of Stockholm’s dearly missed Drömfakulteten collective — has announced her first proper LP, a haunting collection of electroacoustic, ambient, and drone music that sounds as if it were beamed from the great beyond or another dimension entirely.

Which makes sense; Anomi (due out October 30th through Marlena Salonen and Linus Hillborg’s Moloton label) is actually named after the Swedish word for anomie. French sociologist Émile Durkheim came up with the concept way back in 1893.

According to a press release, “he suggested that for societies to function and their individuals to prosper, they need to be driven by strong and distinct norms, both social and moral. If absent, individuals are exposed to anomie, and start to inhibit self-destructive behavior. Anomie is a state of suffering, an absence of affinity, both to the individual and to society – which creates dissonance in the human experience. It denies us the presence of death and disconnects humanity from its nature and inherent mysticism.”

Tofik’s record addresses this harmful aspect of the human condition by trying to find a balance, and embracing the notions we lost a long time ago. Or as she puts it, via the following song premiere….

‘Anomi’ has been a project for me to explore the weight of the human experience that is part of everyday life, through music. During the process of producing the album I’ve had to get in contact with uncomfortable feelings and thoughts.

“All Errors Are Mine” is about the imperfections of being human that have hurt me, but after I have tried to acknowledge them, instead have turned into music which is comforting and soothing in times of instability.
