Snoop Dogg Set To Perform ‘Doggystyle’ At the First Ever Catalpa Festival, Which Also Happens to Feature a Flame-Spitting DJ Booth

Snoop DoggJust when you thought we might make it through a summer without a new festival promising a “truly authentic, fresh and unique musical experience” with decent food, Burning Man-like art installations, and DJs performing inside a “mind-blowing spire that shoots giant 30-foot flame balls from its peak,” the first-ever Catalpa Festival has done just that. Set to invade Randalls Island on July 28-29, “the year’s most unique and original music and lifestyle event” (their words, not ours) will feature sets from the Black Keys, TV on the Radio, AraabMUZIK, the Big Pink, and a host of others that happen to hit that elusive Coachella-on-a-budget demographic. Oh, and Snoop Dogg will be performing Doggystyle in full, ATP style.

Listen To Five S/T-Approved GRAMMY Winners Besides Arcade Fire

We get it—the good guys won for once, bringing some brief signs of life to an otherwise dreary/typical GRAMMY display that included major awards for many artists who write lyrics at a fifth grade reading level (Bruno Mars, Train, Paul McCartney). Here are some other reasons to rejoice from the music industry’s annual tribute to how bad Middle America’s taste is…

1MM: The Black Keys @ Terminal 5, 2.6.09

[Photos by Andrew Parks; slideshow available here]

Swampy mix aside (your acoustics never cease to amaze us, Terminal 5), The Black Keys plowed through the first night of a sold-out New York residency on Friday, including such set standouts as “10 A.M. Automatic,” “Strange Times” and “Girl Is On My Mind.” Standing a few feet away from Patrick Carney’s towering drum kit, we were bowled over by how powerful his playing is—maybe it’s because he’s 7-feet-tall, but whatever—and as you’ll see by the shots below, frontman Dan Auerbach is a bit antsy these days as well …
