NEEDLE EXCHANGE 072: An Exclusive Mix By … We Were Promised Jetpacks

Words and Mix by Michael Palmer of We Were Promised Jetpacks

Hiya! I’m Mike from We Were Promised Jetpacks. Here’s a wee DJ set. The songs are essentially just songs that I like and I think go well together. I’m really not tooooo fussed about doing a DJ set where I play some songs for people. My record collection isn’t that interesting and it’s quite hard trying to judge a room and work out what people want to hear. I’m also not really too interested in having a common theme with songs, or a link in any way (“all of these songs were recorded on a Thursday!”). But I do like trying to make a whole bunch of different records by a whole bunch of different people sound like one piece of music that exists on its own. That IS fun!

I realize now that I’m relying pretty heavily on the Scottish band Errors. But fuck it. They’re great. Also, I hope they don’t hate me for putting acapellas on top of their incredible instrumental music. I won’t be telling them, so if they find out I’m blaming you…

We Were Promised Jetpacks Announce New Album, ‘In the Pit of the Stomach’

We Were Promised Jetpacks have finally revealed some details behind their long-awaited second LP. Due out October 4th through Fatcat, In the Pit of the Stomach was tracked over the course of three weeks with the group’s live sound engineer, Andrew Bush. Peter Katis (Frightened Rabbit, The National) also helped out with mixing and additional production details. If the free song below (“Act On Impulse”) is any indication, it sounds like they were able to bottle the band’s pressure cooked dynamics quite well.

Have a listen and a look at some tour dates…

PEEP SHOW @ SXSW: We Were Promised Jetpacks Put the Rockateer Gear Down, Pick Up an Acoustic

Yes we realize it’s almost June. That said, we uncovered yet another set of SXSW-related video clips this week—clips we’re going to share throughout the holiday weekend because self-titled doesn’t know the meaning of ‘vacation.’ First up: an interview and pair of special acoustic performances from We Were Promised Jetpacks. Aside from possessing the most brilliant band name of 2009—not including Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, of course—the quartet is our favorite Scottish band since their Fatcat labelmates, The Twilight Sad.

Find out why before their debut, These Four Walls, drops in early July…
