Charli XCX Charli XCX has revealed some more details about her debut record. Speaking to Billboard, the singer promised that the long-awaited LP would be out in “April or May” and include such previously released singles as “Nuclear Seasons,” “Stay Away” and the Gold Panda vehicle “You (Ha Ha Ha).” As for whether he collaboration with Clams Casino will make the cut, she said, “He’s one of my favorite producers and I love the sound that he makes—it’s so luscious, angelic, and kind of drugged out at the same time. We did the session and the stuff that we got sounded really cool. We haven’t finished yet. I never know [if it will make the album] until it’s at least finished, and I have like five weeks to listen to that one song on repeat and then I’m like, ‘I know, it’s going to be Track 5 on the album!’”

Watch Charli XCX’s Gold Panda-Sampling Grindhouse Tribute

Charli XCX's video for "You (Ha Ha Ha)"

In a move that’s a little awkward—at least on the surface—given the ongoing conversation about gun control in this country, Charli XCX has released a Rave Girls With Machine Guns video for her new “You (Ha Ha Ha)” single. Here’s what the anti-pop singer had to say about it, via Pitchfork:

We’d been heavily influenced by the world of Tumblr superstars and the quick click, pop-tastic world of the internet in my previous videos, so this time we decided to look elsewhere. We’d been watching a lot of grindhouse movies, mostly with strong female leads like The Pom Pom Girls and Coffy, and there seemed to be a bizarre cross over from that genre of cinema and today’s world of pop. Shooting the video in a gun factory seemed like the perfect grindhouse setting for a kick ass, girl power story, with super pretty girls swapping the bullets for lipstick. Cute!

So there you have it: the clip’s like a Spice Girls video co-directed by Quentin Tarantino and Ryan Trecartin. Or something…

BREAKING: An Interview With … Charli XCX

Charli XCX

Words by Arye Dworken

When listening to Charli XCX’s limited goth-pop output, one would assume she’s a child of the ’80s, yet Charlotte Aitchison missed that decade entirely by two years. And the frizzy haired British ingénue makes no apologies about nostalgia for times never experienced firsthand, either.

But then again, just about everything Charli does is unapologetic. During our interview, for example, she eats two slices of exceptionally cheesy pizza while carrying on a completely cohesive conversation about her spotlight-seizing stage outfits (midriff-baring belly shirts, catsuits, an earlobe-latched nose piercing that’s drawn blood before), epiletic dance moves, and the seemingly embarrassing songs she wrote and recorded as an adolescent, “!Franchesckaar!” and “I Wanna Be Darth Vader.”

“The expectations [based on those songs] were so low,” explains Charli, “that the new stuff will really impress them.”

By “the new stuff,” she means the mixtape (Heartbreaks and Earthquakes) and EP (You’re the One) that dropped this week. Here’s the full breakdown…
