If you can’t tell by the delay in posting our final set of Pitchfork Music Festival photos, last weekend kinda left us feeling like the guy in the above photo. Here’s what wore us  out as we tried to hit every act across three stages…

RECORDING UNDER THE INFLUENCE: Kylesa

Recording Under the Influence is a recurring self-titled feature where we ask artists to ignore their musical inspirations for a minute and share what really went into the making of a particular record. The following missive is from Kylesa vocalist/guitarist Laura Pleasants, who explains some of the reasons why Spiral Shadow is the closest they’ve come to writing an indie rock record. A killer indie rock record, mind you; and one that completely lacks the crustiness they started chipping away at several albums ago. Maybe this is to blame: “the pipe, Project Runway and bacon”…

Sorry to break it to you, blogosphere, but we just don’t believe in lists anymore. They’re just so arbitrary, and a couple mouse clicks away from being obsolete, you know?

That’s why we decided to give you a completely random rundown of our favorite ’09 releases—because it’s not as predictable or pointless as an argument over “who’s No. 1 this year, Dirty Projectors or Animal Collective?” Be sure to watch out for a second set of s/t-endorsed records before the clock strikes 12 on Thursday night.

FREE ASSOCIATION: Kylesa Shares the Stories Behind Our Favorite Metal Album of the Year, “Static Tensions”

By Austin L. Ray

Quick: Name a state that’s more responsible for today’s finest metal than Georgia. Just try; although your answer’s gonna be wrong no matter what. Shall we count the reasons why? Mastodon. Harvey Milk. Baroness. Torche (in part). Zoroaster. Withered. The list goes on, but it wouldn’t be complete without Savannah’s Kylesa. Purveyors of one of 2009′s finest records, metal or otherwise—the monstrous Static Tensions—these four fellas (and one teeth-gnashing gal) have made quite a name for themselves over the past eight years.

Guitarist/vocalist Phillip Cope took a few moments away from the band’s relentless touring schedule—which passes through the indie-centric environs of Cake Shop (!) next Saturday—to dig into a few cuts for self-titled.

As we all know by now, new releases hit record-store shelves and digital-download services each Tuesday. That’s why self-titled presents the following every week: a new release you’d be stupid not to own (Buy It), one worth checking out if you’re the curious type (Burn It) and something you might have heard about but probably should avoid (Skip It). Simple, ain’t it?

FEED THE ANGER: “Sorry, Honey. I Love Metal”

By Aaron Richter

Transforming from a bespectacled indie-rock dweeb into a burgeoning metal head isn’t easy. First, there’s the feeling of discouraging ignorance, that no matter what you’re listening to, now matter how fantastic it is, you simply like it because, well, it’s metal and you either heard or read somewhere that it’s supposed to be good. Maybe let’s call that a lack of discerning taste. This can be acquired easy enough. And with enough dedication you’ll be touting the merits of Dopethrone and impressing friends at parties with your sub-basic knowledge of Øystein Aarseth’s murder.

A much more difficult mountain to climb, so to speak, is the girlfriend. She can’t be ignored. Or disregarded. No, that won’t do. Because she’s hot and awesome. And no Matt Pike bellow or Mick Harris blast beat is worth losing the love of your life over. (Unless, of course, she sucks, in which case this article is probably not for you.) Any true metal obsession means that she’ll be forced to digest extreme music at least once a day, intentionally or not. And for the uninitiated, that’s a lot to bear. Thus, altering her tastes becomes a conquest of sorts, one in which you must triumph. Here are ten necessary steps to victory.

FLOOR PUNCH: The View From the Pit of Kylesa’s First Basement Show in Forever

[Photos by Andrew Parks; slideshow available here]

Token heckler statement: “Why don’t you play some more Drive Like Jehu covers, you emo pussies!”

To be clear, Tournament are not weak-willed descendants of Dashboard Confessional. Unfortunately, they’re also not Kylesa, the sludge-slinging, crust-punk-catering Savannah band that made a rare back-to-basics appearance in the Charleston‘s basement last night. Yes, basement—the kind of overstuffed spot that encourages pinball-like mosh pits and holds 100 people, tops.

Needless to say, self-titled happily revisited our Buffalo hardcore roots as we fired off shots from the floor and dodged quite a few sucker punches. Tournament was tight, Tombs was fierce (as in, really really heavy, not the Christian Siriano definition), and Kylesa was incredible.

Be sure to watch our daily site and upcoming digital issues for more from Tombs and Kylesa, as both bands are about to release serious Top 10 contenders for extreme music aficiandos. (Tombs is prepping their Relapse debut for a February 17 release, and Kylesa just completed their Static Tensions LP for a March 17 street date. Both are highly recommended.)

Now, onto the windmills and drop kicks …
