1MM: Harlem Saves an Otherwise-Underwhelming Greatest-Hits Edition of the Village Voice’s Siren Music Festival

Photos by Aaron Richter

It’s become routine to complain about the Siren Music Festival: the heat, the crowds, the lines for food and Porta-Johns, and it’s never as good as it was the year before, is it? But self-titled (perhaps, in part, due to the endless flow of comp beer in the VIP area) has always managed to squeeze a rad time out of braving the masses at Coney Island—whether it’s been watching Thee Oh Sees tear through one of the shortest and fiercest Siren sets ever, seeing Art Brut’s Eddie Argos work the second-stage crowd into a frenzy during “Good Weekend,” or catching Q and Not U’s NYC farewell.

This year, amid what must have been a budget-stifled lineup, Austin trio Harlem served the fest’s finest set, bouncing through the fantastic Hippies, and urging the crowd to crush the barricade and overtake the photo pit. Our voice is still prickly today from shouting along to “South of France” and “Some Day Soon.” After the jump, check out photos from Siren, including shots of Screaming Females, Surfer Blood, the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Harlem and Ted Leo.

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Check Out Six New Tracks From Weird Wives, The New Noise-Rock Side Project of Surfer Blood

The two guys in the middle do not approve this message

Oh Twitter, we love thee. Why, you ask? Because without you we wouldn’t know such important things as Zomby’s Soundcloud sketches and the following blast of Big Blackness from Weird Wives, a new noise-rock project from 3/5 of Surfer Blood (guitarist Thomas Fekete, bassist Brian Black and touring percussionist/keyboardist Marcos Marchesani) and some verse-chewing singer named Nick Klein.

As leaked on the band’s own Twitter account last night, here is one two-track single and a complete EP with such tellingly-named cuts as “Snake Boy” and the nine ear-ringing, pedal-pushing minutes of “Bulldozer Puppet Fucker.” Sounds like someone’s been listening to a lot of Lightning Bolt, Unsane and Jesus Lizard. A proper 7-inch of even more Weird Wives wackiness is on the way soon…

1MM @ SXSW: Live and Direct With Brahms, Bear In Heaven, Suckers, Warpaint, Toro Y Moi and More

Just when you thought we were done with our South By Southwest coverage, two of our favorite freelance photographers filed some killer candids and live shots from the front lines of the fest. Here’s how Nick Helderman saw things, and if you haven’t already, be sure to check out his look at the first—and most likely, last—MtyMx Festival.

MICROWAVE ONLY: Here’s What Survived Surfer Blood’s Market Hotel Show With Grooms, Turbo Fruits, Beach Fossils and the Morning Benders

Photos by Turkishomework

Each week we send Turkishomework out to capture a sliver of our city’s blurred-vision nightlife. And boy was it blurry on Saturday night, as Surfer Blood topped a beyond-packed Market Hotel bill that also featured Turbo Fruits, Beach Fossils, Grooms and the Morning Benders. Or as Turkishomework wrote on her Twitter at one point, “Should I take pics of this mob of 15 year olds or a band I can’t even see decisions decisions.”

Indeed.
