Town and Country, “Aubergine”
Summer never really ended for me growing up South Florida. The only thing to really distinguish it is hurricane season. (The tropical cyclone, not the college athletic team.) Around these times, tropical storms create a stillness and a bizarreness that has always stuck with me. The starkness of this song reminds me of that time.

Big Daddy Kane, “Ain’t No Half Steppin”
This jam was always pumping out of my brother’s room, out of his Lasonic stereo system that had red lights every time the bass hit. I saw BDK perform at Celebrate Brooklyn a few years back and it was maybe the best live show I’ve seen in a long time. The magic cookie helped.

Midnight Star, “The Midas Touch (Hell Interface Remix)”
When I lived in Savannah from 1999 through 2003, I would stay during the summer at college. In 2001, I got a job at a record store and a night at a local French restaurant bar that turned into the best place to dance at all summer. We all hung out there–all my friends and passersby. This song encapsulates all those good times.

Gastr Del Sol, “Seasons Change”
One summer I was taking a class learning film and animation. This was the theme song for a few of the first visual pieces I made. It’s a summer jam.

Prefuse 73, “Afternoon Love’in”
This was played a lot from a bootleg CD I received from Michna in 2000, way before GSH released this record. Years later, me and Prefuse became good friends and worked on lots of music I’m proud of.
