Moog Launches Sub Phatty Synth With New Flying Lotus Track

Moog's Sub Phatty synth

As premiered on Pitchfork earlier this morning, Flying Lotus has lent a barbones beat to the launch of Moog’s new Sub Phatty synthesizer. Here’s how the company describes its “new standard for analog sound design”:

Introducing the Sub Phatty analog synthesizer. The soul and hands-on, real-time sound design functionality of vintage Moog instruments with a completely new — and stunningly aggressive — sound design machine. Fitted with 25 full-size synth action keys, 16 presets with panel mode, and a 31 knob front panel, Moog’s classic control design plugs you straight into the analog heart of this powerful new instrument.

In-depth info can be found here, or you could just head down below for a hands-on demo, more gear head shots and a free download of FlyLo’s Moog-flexing track alongside the animation of Adam Fuchs

Download the Deluxe Edition of Flying Lotus’ Captain Murphy Mixtape, F/ TNGHT, Earl Sweatshirt, Madlib, Teebs, and More

Captain Murphy

Ever the merry prankster, Flying Lotus performed a surprise set as Captain Murphy last night, putting an end to rumors that the mysterious MC is someone from Odd Future or simply another Madlib project. Both artists appear on Duality, however, with Earl Sweatshirt adding a few verses to “Between Friends” and Madlib joining FlyLo—a former Stones Throw intern, mind you—behind the boards on “Children of the Atom.” Also lending beats or rhymes to the tape are TNGHT, Just Blaze, Jeremiah Jae, Teebs, SAMIYAM, Azizi Gibson and…Alejandro Jodorowsky? Yep. Stream/download it all below—an absolute must-listen for anyone who misses the mask-switching golden age of MF Doom, Kool Keith and, well, Madlib.

UPDATE: Flying Lotus also uploaded the instrumental version of ‘Duality’ so we went ahead and added that our post below as well…

DOWNLOAD THIS NOW: Flying Lotus’ Bedtime Mix For BBC Radio 1

Flying Lotus

This past weekend, Flying Lotus rang Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show to play and discuss his favorite bedtime songs. The producer’s ‘mix’ is just four tracks deep, but every single selection’s golden, and his commentary afterwards is worth the wait if you’re a fan…

VIDEO: Flying Lotus Unveils Short ‘Until the Quiet Comes’ Film

Flying Lotus - 'Until the Quiet Comes' Short Film

One of our favorite things about Flying Lotus isn’t his increasingly free-jazz-y music; it’s the whole package, the way he translates the spiritual transcendence of his aunt Alice Coltrane for the beat head generation, then fuses it all with a director’s eye. As we explored in our cover story with the producer and a separate interview entirely about entertainment, FlyLo approaches his art as such—an ever-evolving project he hopes to hang in a gallery someday.

This is especially apparent in the following short film, which pairs tracks from his upcoming Until the Quiet Comes album (available October 2nd through Warp) with visuals that are both gorgeous and deeply disturbing…

PITCHFORK MUSIC FESTIVAL PHOTOS: Sleigh Bells, Wild Flag, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Cloud Nothings, Atlas Sound, and More

Words and Photos by Andrew Parks

“The rain killed my shit,” said Bradford Cox, as he wrapped up one of his meandering, intermittently entertaining Atlas Sound sets.

Anyone who spent their entire day at the Pitchfork Music Festival on Saturday felt the Deerhunter frontman’s pain throughout, with an afternoon that was plagued by power shortages (the cacophonous close of Cloud Nothings’ set), mud-mashing downpours and Liturgy’s strange turn from a philosophy-quoting black-metal band to a laptop-shocked duo. Moments of brilliance peeked through the clouds, however, including the whiplash rock of Wild Flag (including a killer cover of Television’s “See No Evil” that was lost on most fans), the Marshall stack breakdowns of Sleigh Bells, and the grandiose apocalypse now scores of Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Have a look at our photo evidence below…

LISTEN: Daedelus, Live On Morning Becomes Eclectic

Via Daedelus’ Soundcloud:

An almost 30 minute mix of a morning live set, really pretty mellow throughout and still a snap shot for me of what I was feeling in 2010. I hope it has weight going into 2012. You’ll notice sounds from Lorn, Floating Points, Tokimonsta, Flying Lotus, and all sorts of non-electronics like Sonic Youth and Beirut, among many many other odds and ends.
