Stones Throw Reveals 7” Box Set of J Dilla’s ‘Donuts’ Album

J Dilla's 'Donuts' box set

And the posthumous J Dilla releases continue…This time it’s a box set presentation of the producer’s next level beat tape Donuts. Spread across eight 7-inches, the collection includes a bonus 45 that pairs a rare picture disc A-side (“Signs”) with DOOM and Ghostface Killah’s previously unpressed takes on Dilla instrumentals (“Sniper Elite,” “Murder Goons”). Don’t add it to your Christmas list, though; the collection is set to ship around January 7th via Stones Throw.

To get an idea of why you’d want to spend nearly $40 on a 43-minute album—reason one: you could play these records back to back and sound like an absolutely brilliant DJ—check out a sample-by-sample breakdown below, alongside a Spotify stream, an embeddable Soundcloud track and an official video…

PRIMER: Lilacs & Champagne On … The Art of Sampling

Lilacs & Champagne had us at goodbye—namely the line in their bio that promised “something like the sound of Nurse With Wound collaborating with J Dilla.”

Not that any of this loop-led tomfoolery should be all that surprising. After all, Emil Amos—one half of the Grails-related duo alongside Alex Hall—lent us a library music mix in late 2010, calling the cult favorites a “hidden pinnacle for those who can afford to dig around in the upper echelons of obtuse record collecting in these troubled times.”

Luckyily, the following artists have done the digging for us over the years…

PRIMER: Pilooski On … Disco Edits

If you can’t tell by the lack of “buzz-stirring” posts this week, self-titled is basically skipping CMJ due to the fact that our fellow music sites/magazines will all be writing about the same five or six acts next week. (Some guesses without even watching anything: Tamaryn, Wild Nothing, DOM, Gold Panda…)

One event worth your time, however, is tonight’s Abracada showcase at Hiro Ballroom. It’s the only U.S. stop on a worldwide tour featuring Pilooski, Mikix the Cat, a Yuksek/Brodinski side project (The Krays), and a handful of other acts from Paris’ most promising dance imprint in a minute or two.

To get you well ready to do the robot tonight, we asked Pilooski to list some of his favorite disco edits. Listen and look below…

BUY IT, BURN IT, SKIP IT: J Dilla, Patrick Wolf, Franz Ferdinand

dilla

By Aaron Richter

As we all know by now, new releases hit record-store shelves and digital-download services each Tuesday. That’s why self-titled presents the following every week: a new release you’d be stupid not to own (Buy It), one worth checking out if you’re the curious type (Burn It) and something you might have heard about but probably should avoid (Skip It). Simple, ain’t it?
